If this stuff keeps up, we're screwed! The media will always crucify the right and ignore the mistakes of the left.

Bush insults reporter who wrote critical articles

Updated 1:52 PM ET September 4, 2000

NAPERVILLE, Ill. (Reuters) - George W. Bush, who has promised to bring a new tone of civility to politics, displayed little warmth for a reporter Monday, whispering to his running mate that the journalist was a "major league *******."

The Republican presidential nominee was unaware his microphone was live when he leaned over to Dick Cheney at a Labor Day rally and said, "There's Adam Clymer, major league ******* from the New York Times."

Cheney responded, "Oh yeah, he is, big time."

Bush was unhappy with a series of articles by Clymer that were critical of the Texas's governor's record in Austin.

Bush, whose bid for the White House has been based largely on "changing the tone" in Washington, told the rally in the Chicago suburb that it was "time to get some plain-spoken folks" in the nation's capital.

His spokeswoman, Karen Hughes, said the remark was "a whispered aside to his running mate."

"It was not intended as a public comment," she said, adding, "It was a reference to a series of articles the governor felt was unfair."

The campaign of Bush's Democratic rival, Vice President Al Gore, was quick to respond.

"We hold virtually all members of the Fourth Estate in the highest regard and we believe they should be part of the democratic process day in and day out," spokesman Chris Lehane said.

Where is that puke-emoticon when you need it?

I shure hope we not bein set up.

I think that you will need to hold your breath all the way to the finish line. I suspect that there are a million ways that George can self-destruct. Gore will help him out!

Maybe it's time for a novel approach. Instead of squirming and apologizing (which is what the media wants - can you say "feeding frenzy"?) and trying to minimize the damage, what I'd like to see is Bush stand up and say, "Yeah, I called him a major leage @$$hole, and I meant it. Prove me wrong." The sudden application of backbone seemed to work for Wayne LaPierre when he said Clinton "needs a certain level of violence".

Sounds like a factual description to me. As a long time, regular reader of the NYT I see no problem with it.

Well, no fecal material, Detective Holmes!

Of course you'd say that when the vast majority of the 4th estate is demonstrably on your side.

Sheesh.

As another has already opined, I hope Bush tells 'em "yes, I meant it in regards to that twerp."

The big thing is how will Bush stand on his comment. Will he apologize and squirm or stand tall and say he meant it?
I'm with Jeff, CA. I hope he stands tall and will be seriously disappointed if he doesn't. I think it would do his campaian alot of good to say "Hell yeah, I meant every word!" People are tired of PC wimps in government.

A Fifth Column is any group working to determine another from the inside. During the Spanish Civil War the Nationalist general Emilio Vidal originally coined the term to identify his supporters. When four of his army "columns" moved on the capital city of Madrid, Vidal called his supporters in the city his "fifth column." Their function was to destroy the loyalist government from the inside.

Bush Uses Profanity About Reporter

NAPERVILLE, Ill. (AP) - George W. Bush (news - web sites) made a disparaging remark Monday about a reporter from The New York Times
that was picked up by a live microphone.

As Bush stood on the podium waiting for music to finish, he turned to running mate Dick Cheney and used an obscenity to describe reporter Adam Clymer in the nearby press area. Cheney agreed with Bush's assessment. Both men thought their remarks were off-mike.

When asked about the comment at a brief airport news conference in Allentown, Pa., late Monday, Bush said, "I regret that a private comment I made to the vice presidential candidate made it through the public airways."

Asked if he felt he owed Clymer an apology, Bush did not answer directly, only saying, "I regret everybody heard what I said."

Karen Hughes, Bush's spokeswoman, said the remarks were "a whispered aside to his running mate. It was not intended as a public comment."

Clymer said, "I'm disappointed in the governor's language."

Cheney refused to discuss it. "The governor made a private comment to me. It was a private comment, and I don't plan to say anything about it," he told reporters later in Chicago.

The great part about this is that I heard a sound bite on the radio. Bush called Cheney "Vice President Cheney" while explaining his stance on the comment.

I flicked on CNN yesterday after noon and saw Karl Rove (Bush's campaign manager) and ? Shrumm (Gore operative). The talking head tried to nail Rove on Bush's open mike problem and failed miserably. Rove had a list of similar episodes the Gore engaged in. Shrumm went ballistic.

Rove is one smart cookie. Looks to me like Dubya/Rove played "rope a dope" with Gore over the debates.

Barry Goldwater--1964

Really, it doesn't get much more amusing than this, does it? ;)

<BLOCKQUOTE><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial">quote:</font><HR>"We hold virtually all members of the Fourth Estate in the highest regard and we believe they should be part of the democratic process day in and day out," [Gore] spokesman Chris Lehane said.[/quote]

Well, I'll take Bush's word that Clymer is an *$$hole, and I'd say the Gore campaign proceeded to kiss it as well. I wouldn't have expected anything less.

I'll take a 'plain spoken' person any day, and I'm glad to see that Bush has not caved in to the expected hysterical reaction to this tiny incident. Here in Arizona we greatly admired an earlier, plain spoken politician / leader - the late Senator Barry Goldwater. Now, I don't see GW as another 'Goldwater' at this point, but I do know this ... if Barry had called some liberal media dog an *$$hole, the media would have just rolled their eyes and sucked it up, and a lot of other people would have said 'Yes!'.

Perhaps it is high time that the *$$holes in our society started realizing that there are a lot of us out here that have noticed their poor behavior, not to mention their intellectual dishonesty.

Thanks for the laugh. Regards from AZ
