Bush Plan Shows U.S. Is Not Ready for Deadly Flu

I thought birds were supposed to fly:cool:

A good friend of mine is the areas Bio-Terrorism coordinator (health dept). He also deals with preparedness for things like this. He thinks this is much-ado-about -nothing.

I bet you see a run on gas masks at gunshows ala Y2K.

Personally, just looking at job performance, it seems to that "Bush, and Plan" are an oxymoron. I haven't seen a plan yet, only reaction to events.

.

If the world was going to be destroyed by some disaster, do you really think they would tell everyone, or play it down to prevent panic.

If the flu can be transmitted to humans from birds, and from birds to birds, then those remote villages may be visited by birds. Alfred Hitchcock anyone
?

If people are already infected with the flu, we should be working a vaccine now.

Butch-
If viral vaccines were simple a matter of manpower and manufacturing, HIV would have been conquered easily in the 90's. Viruses simply don't lend themselves to easy vaccine answers.

I disagree. Why are drug commpanies so prospeous? More money in selling prescriptions than finding a cure.

Why can't we (by law) buy prescriptions from across the border, and yet the government can?
Pharmecutical companies have too much influence in DC.

Why isn't marijuana (argueably the best natural medicine) for many ailments, legalized? It can be grown naturally, and the drug producers can't regulate it's sale, if everyone can grow their own. This is not an arguement for or against "wacky weed" it is only a point.

In short if people think they are going to die they will shell out every last penny they own for 1% chance of living.

One last thought. The news recently reports that scientist had to go to great lengths to repoduce the 1918 strain that killed millions, in order to study it. Less than a year ago it was reported that this strain was "accidently" released to thousands of labs, who were to identify it's strain in order to demonstrate their proficency. Something doesn't seem right there.

"I disagree."

That's fine, but he's still correct.

There is no way to stockpile an avian flu vaccine, for the general population, for an avian flu strain that has NOT made the person to person jump yet. The 60 cases I keep reading about were bird to person and not person to person. Think about the yearly flu season. There's no way to stockpile a regular flu vaccine that will deal with all the strains that show up each year. They make a series of educated guesses every year and make batches of flu vaccine that they HOPE will work on the major strains/mutations that actually do show up.
