Bush Administration Prevents Another Terror Attack on U.S. Soil

Timeline

I think that the timing was the problem... having all these Politicals in the Agencies fighting each other had more to do with the reluctance to form a Major Agency in a few months. Look at all the Agencies that make up DHS (USCG, FBI, CBP, ICE, etc., etc.). Did not matter what President Bush did he was going to be "blamed," for not doing it quick enough, doing it too quick, etc.

So, it's somehow a bad thing that these people were stopped?

Jet fuel will burn. It's not like gasoline, either, more like kerosene. Rupturing a line under pressure will guarantee a spray of fine droplets, which will readily burn. That's the principle of the burner in a boiler. As pressure drops, it will also begin to burn in the pipes, as oxygen allows. The burning liquid will flow, finding cracks and fissures that will allow it to continue to move, and will spread fire as it goes. It, and the heavy, toxic, smoke it produces would fill spaces, asphyxiating anyone unable to flee. The results in a crowded area would be pretty horrifying. Low-tech, but deadly.

There are people here who expect to find someone to blame for everything perpetrated on America, unless you blame the perpetrators. If it isn't a present or past politician, it just doesn't appear on their event horizon.

The fact that, somehow, they haven't been personally contacted to direct every facet of our government, is reason enough for them to blather on about opportunities missed, and decisions that failed, in their minds, to produce the effects that they wished for.

There are no sides available in this struggle. If you're American, the Islamic Fundamentalists want you dead.

I'll accept that.

It is time to reset the govt. Those that want a bigger govt keep getting it, and those that want a smaller govt keep making it grow anyways.

DHS should have streamlined things, but initially it was simply another layer. Things should be getting better, but who knows. . . the whole point was to facilitate communication problems that were apparent between the FBI and the CIA, but they aren't even under the umbrella of DHS! (unless I am missing something from the org chart?)

Hey you guys remember how the French nickel-and-dimed themselves out of Algeria by confusing tactical victories with strategic ones? The terrorists simply planted a buncha bombs around Algiers and the French had no recourse (or so they thought) but to torture suspected terrorists for information. They succeeded, too. They saved Algiers, but because their tactics were so heavy-handed, they ended up losing the war.

If you don't remember this, don't feel too bad. Our president doesn't remember it either.

Good job paying attention to the bums walking around the front yard while paying no attention to the freakin' absence of a door at the back of the house. Until the US takes border security seriously I will refuse to believe it is serious about domestic terrorism. We are being set up for the mother of all terror strikes.

Here is a dude who crossed the Rio riding and elephant and followed by a mariachi band. . . . . . and no one intercepted him on the US side.

and here is a written report

Not too many years ago they caught a guy with radioactive material after he had crossed the border. It's amazing to me they haven't caught al-qaeda types trying to cross from Mexico. It's not like it's a big secret that it's easy to do.

I never ever feel the least bit sorry for the losers that get caught up in these stings but I do sometimes have issues with the way we go about catching them. The govt finds these groups, infiltrates them, then encourages and assists them in planning such things, then busts them for being involved.

They then parade them out on Tv and say "look at the big bad criminals we caught" when in reality all they did was lead a few morons with bad intentions and a willingness to do evil down a bad raod then bust them at their leisure. It is all a big publicity scam. They can't catch the real bad guys so they take bad guy wanna-bes and turn them into promotional material.

It is kind of like the guys that get caught in stings where they think they are talking to a 14yr old girl on the net and it is really a police officer. The guys are scum and deserve to go down hard but I just have a problem with the whole issue of entrapment. I do not like it when an undercover person puts the carrot in from of someone, tells them "doesn't that carrot look tasty", then bust them when they eat it.

It has always reaked of creating crime to me. They cannot catch people actually committing a crime so they stage one and bust those that fall into the trap. It is almost like being prosecuted for havig bad thoughts. if you would have never acted on them if not encouraged is that as bad as someone that actually does bad thigs on their own or is it along the lines of the authorities playing the role of thought police.

Well said. I can't stand to watch it on MSNBC. Not because those guys are nitwits, but because it's contrived entertainment at their expense.

I ask a simple question, who has the biggest interest in keeping the us/mexico border safe from terrorist? Mexicans that's who!!! The reason terrorists can't invade through that "easy way in" is because the guys who's lives depend on that know that the minute a terrorist crosses that border it gets shut down.

We are lucky, neither Canadians nor Mexicans are sympathetic to terrorists of any kind. Most of your illegal immigrants just want a little something for themselves, they sure don't want to kill the golden goose.

Fremmer I am VERY surprised at you.

You should know by now that if the information/incident is NEGATIVE, it is all George Bush's personal fault.

If, however, the information/incident is POSITIVE, then George Bush cannot, under any circumstances, receive credit for it.

Silly you!

"Wasn't this part of the story debunked? As in physically impossible as jet fuel isn't exactly a wick? (now the fumes on the other hand . . .)"

Ever see a BLEV explosion?

It stands for Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapor explosion.

Essentially it happens when a fire heats the contents of a storage tank to the point where it starts to boil, and the tank pressurizes, and then ruptures. The escaping vapor and atomized fuel then ignites in what can be a tremendously violent explosion.

There have been numerous BLEV explosions at tank farms, refineries, etc., over the years.

It doesn't matter if the material isn't really that flammable on its own.

Bush's belligerent foreign policy is making terrorists want to attack us here even more than they ever did before. While going into Afghanistan to hunt for Osama was justified -- and I think most of the world agrees -- just about all other US military involvement and saber-rattling in the Middle East is not. Apart from buying their oil at fair prices, and perhaps becoming an honest broker for peace between Israel and the Palestinians (rather than completely one-sided in favor of Israel), we need to extricate ourselves from that region.

Most of the Iraqi insurgents seem to be content with staying on their own soil and trying to kill American soldiers. However, any time one of them wants to put down his arms, leave the country posing as a refugee, travel across the ocean, and then sneak across the porous US border in order to attack civilians here, he can certainly do so. There's nothing to stop anyone from any other country from doing the same.

Fatherland Security might stop most of them, but we can be certain that least one major attack will eventually slip through. Then that will be used as an excuse to have an even more belligerent foreign policy, as the attack will be blamed on the government of some other Middle Eastern country that the neocons have long wanted the US to topple. Then the cycle will continue without end, and the only thing that we'll get out of it is the even more diminished recognition of our Constitutional rights in the name of "security."

Mike,

I'll give Bush credit for the fact that there haven't been any terrorist attacks these last few years. He's already fallen into their trap by playing their game their way. They don't *need* to attack us again.

It is all a big publicity scam. They can't catch the real bad guys so they take bad guy wanna-bes and turn them into promotional material.

All just a publicity scam? These people were planning a major terrorist attack on JFK. They were traveling to foreign countries to seek support for the attack. An attack inside America was prevented by effective law enforcement and investigation.

The Administration has done a good job with merging several different departments under the DHS. At least everyone can now share information. The Administration prevented an attack before it happened, and I think that we can all at least acknowledge that simple fact.

An attack inside America was prevented by effective law enforcement and investigation.

I can acknowledge that.

I don't think any more credit is due to the administration anymore than I would credit Clinton for the foiled millennium plot, though.

Police say the men never got their hands on explosives or funding and lacked the technical expertise to attack JFK airport's fuel tanks and underground pipeline.

SO.... you need to remember that they didn't have the explosives, nor the money to get the explosives, nor the knowledge of how to use the explosives even if they had it. This was nipped in the bud way before there was any actual danger.

Nice to know they had no funding. Apparently they aren't al quaeda. Of course, then you have to question their motivation, where they came from, and when they decided to try to attack us.
