barrel length

you said walmart?
well, this might not be legal in all states. Here in Michigan it has to be a certain length to be legal. I think from what the local gunsmith was saying about barrels in michigan is it is a federal crime with a 10 yr sentence. They were telling me a guy cut one down for duck hunting, yeah, and they bought it for parts and informed him how illegal it was. ooops...
I should look this up in the legals here then.
It is cool looking, and of course to be legal I would go with the gun above it too to save me from real problems.

Violating federal gun law is a federal crime and I think 10 years is either min. or max. for this but not sure...

Any other laws imposed by a state would be a state law with state mandated min and max penalty...

at least 18 inches and overall 26 inches. So yeah this wouldn't fly with me here.

What are Michigan length minimums? The gun is federally legal with a barrel at least 18 inches and overall length of 26 or more.

My Mossberg Bullpup was fully legal when I bought it at walmart.

I know this 870 is legit (no need for NFA tax stamps) since an 18" barrel, the frame and a pistol grip will exceed the 26" minimum...

ok so they are considering the entire length not just the barrel starting at the end. Because from the gunsmith , he's a retired gun trainer for the state police and his son just knows the law. I will ask again, cause I'm getting my gun today. He made it sound like they are measuring from where the end of it is. Not sure , let me check.
I just looked it up in pdf it says at least 18inches. I'll post what they explain soon;)

oh yeah, I am sure this is minium sentence in michigan. depends on why you were caught with gun I am sure or maybe even intent! I do live in michigan and sometimes the law is very strict or full of ear marks. not sure. I stay far from trouble.

Easy way to do the measurements...
Barrel is best measured by dropping a dowel or other shaft down the bore until rests on the "bolt face" with action closed. Mark and remove... measure dowel to mark.

For verall length it is easiest to be accurate by placing gun against a wall and measure from floor to tip of barrel being sure measure is straight on gun as diagonal adds distance on the tape measure.

From what I found so far... your state laws mirror federal regs... 18 inch barrel and 26 inch overall... The 870 in this thread would be FULLY legal in michigan if the length law of mich. is correct.

got back from terrible gunsmith, another story.
Ok he is saying from the back of where the bullet sits inside to the end of barrel.? is that correct?
I would have to get my shotgun out and measure it then, I don't see how you could get much shorter then 18" on it by cutting the barrel back? hmmm...

yeah, I guess a person could very well, cut a regular length barrel back under the 18" physically. So it is true. Then that the guy under-estimated his cut or purely didn't know.
I really think the gun shouldn't of been sold either, not sure who ran the sale.

Sure good thing to bring up about barrel lengths though. I wouldn't of really thought about it at a time of a sale if the price was right. For parts, that'd be ok, but wonder if it's still legal to buy it bc possession of it is still a crime!.
Something to remember when auctioning and garage sale'ing... you know?

If the barrel is long enough on the bullpup I think it would be a neat shotgun to think about one day later on. Or, if I was to see one at a sale.

I am finding alot of discussions on here very good information. thanks everyone for making this forum such a great place :)

The bullpup is a rather limited function design... Really a rare circumstance where it would shine over traditional configurations...

Trigger is now on linkages... the balance is completely different than most shooters expect to find...

As for reasons a barrel accidently ends up too short...
First... age of modification could exceed age of current laws...
Second... Guy makes a mark at 18 inches even... "eat the line" with the hack saw and barrel is federal felony material...
Third... Guy marks at 18.5 inches and makes less than square cut and recuts trying to correct the unsquare muzzle... rinse and repeat... illegal... some folks can't make a straight cut to save their life...

cutting lines LOL

that's what I am thinking for sure. I couldn't cut a straight line if I tried
LOL!!!!:D

I still do like this bullpup! :) :)

That's what pipe cutters are for.
Not if there is any taper to the barrel... Also, Anyone to use a pipe cutter needs to verify muzzle diameter after cutting... The process can squash down the muzzle too far... There will also be a very noticeable ridge needing reamed out.

My best friends brother just did a three yr sentence for having a full auto sten while committing other crimes, so ten years might be the max. But this is PA. I wouldn't want to find out though.
