Bulgy Mak

Hey guys! Well I shot my buddy's Polish P-64 the other day. What a brutal little gun! Plenty of pop (not in a good way) with slide bite and a double action trigger from hell. Still, it got me in the mood to buy a surplus 9x18mmm pistol. So, last night I bought a Bulgarian made Makarov PM pistol from J&G Sales:

Advertised as "excellent" condition and comes with a magazine matched to the gun, a military leather holster, and a spare black grip. I also ordered another magazine with it. Anybody own a Bulgarian Makarov? Are they good guns? I hear they are reliable pistols. I also ordered a sticky holster for it and plan to carry it.

Any feedback or comments would be appreciated. Thanks guys!

I own a Russian commercial and have shot and compared it to a buddies Bulgy they are very good guns IMHO much better quality than any modern 380 made. I also have a CZ82 another 9X18 very much worth owning

I've had several. They are good guns.

bulgaria makes fine quality weapons. and the russian PM design is an extremely reliable, accurate, and durable package. i have seen some very impressive torture tests done on them that would make a 1911 or glock or anything else cry.

i have always wanted one. my buddy just a week ago got 2 boxes of brown bear 9x18 from aimsurplus for $9 a piece for 50rds, he has a chinese norinco makarov and cant wait to shoot it

I have a Bulgarian surplus, Russian commercial and an East German surplus. They are all fine handguns. The fit and finish on the Bulgarian is not quite as nice as the German. It is excellent nonetheless with blueing to rival anybodies. I have shot the Bulgarian more than the others. Never a hiccup. It was my carry gun for many years. The Bulgarians build solid dependable firearms.

I have a Bulgy Mak.
Great guns. Solid like brick! Maybe there's a house made of Makarov bricks somewhere in Siberia.

While I like my Mak, I didn't dislike my either of my P-64s at all. I only sold them to fund other purchases. While the recoil is "snappy", I would never describe it as harsh. I never had issues with slide bite (paying attention to your trip style is important with that pistol). And, the DA trigger pull need never be a problem as a $5 spring makes if very pleasant.

Good decision :). Acquired a Bulgy, two EGs, then a comm. Russian to have a Mak. in .380: (diversity).

The Bulgy's DA trigger is not nearly as heavy as two friends' P-64s, and after you first pull it, expect it to become a bit heavier, but not bad. I'm happy for people who like the more compact P-64, with or without a new spring.

The DA pull and recoil on all four of my Maks do not compare to the basic P-64 or my recent (now sold) Walther PPK/S "Made In W. Germany" :(. I had hoped to start a collection of PPK/S types, but disappointment when shooting it quickly persuaded me to take a chance on Makarovs instead.

My Polish P-83 and Czech CZ-82 are also top-quality guns in 9x18.

Thanks gents, just got an ETA email from J&G saying it should be here Wednesday. Just enough time to clean the cosmoline off and get it ready for some Memorial Day weekend shooting adventures! I can't wait!! :D

Just use caution euro trash can be addictive

Well God knows I won't be getting addicted to any P-64s anytime soon! I'm happy for those who like them, but for me they just aren't any fun at all!

Hopefully the Maks are better... I'll find out soon!

Unfortunately for me I purchased a couple of P64's and found them to be beautifully machined pistols that are brutefully difficult to shoot. But then there were Russian Mak's so maybe one of those would be cool...shot nice and made a much better shooter than the P64. What? And EG Mak is the best of the bunch.....yup mine may have been unfired until I received it, super nice pistol. AIM says they have nice Bulgarian Mak's in stock, well better send me a couple they can go in the box with my three CZ 82's that I love to shoot and really nice with Cerakoat finishes. But wait there are also Tokorev pistols on the surplus market, a Yugo (much better than their car)a Romanian and Polish (?) can't remember and too much trouble to dig out of safe. Then someone just had to tell me of their PA 63 so had to add one of those and a SMC (PPK size) to the bulging Combloc box. Almost forgot the CZ 50 and 70 in good ole .32 caliber, like that cartridge and the pistols chambered for it. Glad the CZ52 has sold out before I had the chance to OD on them as well.
Now what was the original question ? Oh crud, forgot to include the P 83----folded piece steel and strange engineering that is so easy to shoot....neat pistol.

I have a FEG PA-63 9x18 that fulfills my longings for a Walther PPK. Ergonomics are horrible, DA trigger is horrible, safety is rough, and it has a surprisingly amount of recoil.

I have a East German Makarov for many years. When I was reloading back then I would trim down 9mm brass to make reloads for the gun. It was hard to find ammo around and I was to cheap to pay the price. I still have the gun it is very accurate and still have ammo that I loaded back then for it :).

Got her in today boys, good LORD what a FILTHY gun!! A "dunk n' scrub" in some of the 'ol mineral spirits sure improved things! Getting it all back together again was kind of tricky, but I think I got it. Oh but how does it shine now!

I have to say, what a SWEET little package this is. It came with a nice black flap holster and a cool lanyard, and a little cleaning rod thing. The gun appears to be in unissued condition and the bore is perfect. No wear on the pistol at all, minus a couple rub marks on the bakelite grips. I am just SO pleased right now, and most happy. I've got 250 rounds of Tulammo 9x18mm Makarov ammunition that should arrive tomorrow. This Memorial Day weekend, I'll be firing it for the first time. Hopefully everything goes okay.

Thanks for the help and input all! :D

Bought my EG Mal many years ago. $100. I have hundreds of XTP 95 gr 9.2mm slugs, Winchester brass, and Mak dies. Plus lots of surplus 9x18.

They are very good guns (if they were not I'd have sold mine and the ammo components.)

Get a set of Wolff springs and replace them in this piece, makes a world of difference!

As for the Bulgie Mak, I have had 3 of them and all worked like a Swiss watch. I used one as my carry gun for years. I wouldn't hesitate a second on a Bulgie Mak. They are rare as hens teeth in my area. In the last 5 yrs. I have ran across one at my local gun/pawn establishment and bought it immediately.

Got the Bulgy Mak out to the range yall!

150 rounds of Tulammo ball.

ZERO malfunctions. I am so pleased with the gun and how it shoots. The single action trigger is very nice, I noticed very little muzzle flip or recoil at all. Everything just worked so perfectly, you can tell this pistol was made RIGHT. I am going to buy a few more magazines and a 1000 round case of ammo for this gun, it is just SO fun to shoot!!

Thanks all! Now I see why the Mak has an almost cult-like following. :)
