BUG really needed?

I am aware and glad that most of the LEOs carry a duty and back up gun. They potentially could be in a situation where it is needed, but I read a lot on here about people with CCWs carrying back up guns too. To me, this sounds of ridiculous.

Granted, I live in West Virginia where city crime is not a huge problem, but I also have lived in Washington, DC area and Phoenix, Arizona area. I carry regularly, and always have a good knife with me too, but it sounds a little paranoid to me for the average Joe citizen to feel the need to carry TWO guns with them all the time.

Maybe some people live in areas where it is needed, but really???

Just my opinion...flame away.:D

True, it is your opinion. But it is also the opinion of some people that a BUG is justified or makes sense or is what they feel comfortable with.

There is no right or wrong there, no sane versus insane, just a simple matter of personal choice.

Personally, I can think of some parts of the nation where I might well feel the desire for a good BUG. Luckily, I do not have to live in those places nor even ever pass through them. But I would never presume to judge the choices of those who do live in such places.

I carry a primary and BUG all the time and live just south of Detroit.

But I've actually heard of people that carry three guns at a time. Well that just sounds ridiculously paranoid. Those people definitely need psychiatric help. I don't want any of them living around me. Why, I am terrified that they are even able to carry a gun. We need better laws.

Actually, when you think about it, if you agree first off that it is a reasonable precaution for anyone to carry even a single firearm for personal protection, then why would it be paranoid to carry more than one? I mean, I just do not see the logic of the extension in that reasoning.

What about people who carry more then one magazine or speed loader? I mean if one loaded gun is fine, then is it also paranoid to carry reloads? And if one reload is reasonable, is it paranoia to carry two or more (or what about that box of extra cartridges in the glove box, is that madness?).

just sayin'...I have been around for 50 years...been carrying for probably 20 years. I guess I have been lucky that I have never once had reason to bring a firearm out while ccw. I feel sorry for you people that live in areas so dangerous that you feel the need to carry two or three guns..

On a side note...anyone ever been stopped or questioned by LEO about your ccw choice to carry two or three guns? Just wondering how that would go down.

Every good argument for a sworn officer to carry a back-up gun is a good argument for a private citizen to carry a back-up gun. Saying it is paranoid for a private citizen to carry a BUG is just a step away along the same lines of "logic" as saying it is paranoid for that citizen to carry anything at all.

My primary gun stands just as great a chance of failing as any police officer's does. My plan A is just as likely to fall apart as a police officer's Plan A. With all due respect, my life is just as important to me as any police officer's is to him. I don't usually carry a BUG, but I feel no shame in doing so when I do.

Personally, I'm more concerned about carrying and handling one handgun responsibly and discreetly. For most ordinary citizens I think two or more is a little extreme, but if you can carry half a dozen and do it well I'm not going to object.

Carrying two guns has nothing to do with paranoia. There is a host of good reasons to carry two guns if you want to. It is the fastest reload, it could equip your backup friend who has no pc., two guns are just plain twice the fun. I carried a BUG for awhile and noticed that the bug got shot more than the primary. (sometimes my work takes me out away from the city)

It's nice to have a box or two of ammo in the truck for just such occassions. :D Anyone else carry a box or more of ammo with them?

I still do not understand what carrying two guns has to do with paranoia...I mean, if I have two guns...what the heck do I have to be paranoid about? :D

I think a backup gun is defintley necessary, even if it is a 22 caliber Beretta. I forget who said this but it goes, "There are situations where 2guns=1 and 1 gun equals none."
--There are an infinte number of reasons to have a BUG I dont want to list them. 1 is MURPHYS LAW. ANYTHING CAN AND WILL HAPPEN. Your super reliable, say Sig 229 (not knocking Sigs just an example gun.) could fail to fire, feed, or eject. What then when rounds are being launched at you and you dont have time to clear it. A backup would sure be nice then ;).

There is also the often left out and forgotten, "give your buddy or wife a gun" part of having a BUG on you.

My back up 26 and one of my 17's reloads, gives whoever I give it to, basically the same thing I have. Another shooter on your side, is an even better use for the BUG. :)

I just carry one. I don't feel the need for handcuffs or a baton or a Tazer, either, but some day I'll probably wish I had one (or the other). :D

Seriously, a LEO has an obligation/duty to stand and finish the fight. I'm gonna do the minimum to protect myself and mine then BUG the hell out. I don't need that extra weight slowin' me down!! :D

AK130K, I was going to mention that actually excellent point. I didnt feel like listing all the needs. However, a situation could arise where you need another shooter. Even if he isnt experienced teach him a bit, have him cover fire while you do the damadge ;). 2 shooters is defintley better than 1.

It's not where you live but whether if you get into a fight:

1. Will the gun break?
2. Will the gun be taken from you are dropped?

What does the neighborhood have to do with it?

In the good neighborhood, you are attacked by a Vegan, sensitive yuppie who charges at you with a cleaver. You draw your primary and he chops it out of your hand or when you try to shoot him - the gun jams. But then he says: Well, since I am a Vegan and sensitive and your gun doesn't work or dropped - I will stop chopping at you.

vs.

Bad neighborhood and your gun jams - Well, good guy - I'm still killing you because this is a bad neighborhood.

The bug is for failure situations. Neighborhood is irrelevant. It is for the branch when you are in the fight. Now, if you think the risk of the gun being disabled or you being disabled is not that high - then you don't need the extra gun.

A gun fight in Tiffany's in the fancy mall or a gun fight in a slum is a still a gun fight - the gun can fail.

There is an old saying--"The quickest reload is a second gun."
That said, I don't carry either extra ammo or BUG, I just don't have the need.
