I have two x-bolt Hunters, left-hand, that have wood stocks. I'm wondering if the stocks are good enough as-is, of if they should be treated to improve their usability for for hunting.
I've had one for five years now. Haven't used it in pouring rain but in light drizzle/heavy South Texas fog. The inside of the stock is coated with what appears as the same finish as the outside. I haven't had any problems and don't worry about it any more than I would any other wood-stocked rifle. Folks have been mounting rifles in wood for a long time and it's really not an issue.
If you're concerned coat the stock with Johnson's Paste Wax and call it good. The manual says to use wax or oil (not both!) to treat the stock if needed.
