Browning HP Discontinued

I've wanted an HP for years but couldn't afford one, but this spring I picked up a fairly nice FEG for a decent price. Wow, do I like this gun. So much I started saving for the real thing. Good thing I have the FEG as I'm sure the prices on HP's will probably preclude me from ever getting one.

I've wanted an HP for years but couldn't afford one,

Yeah, I thought that way too, once. The I discovered that it wasn't that I couldn't afford it, it was that I couldn't justify spending the money on it, at the time. Later, as life went on, experience gave me a different viewpoint.

Take some well meant advice from someone who one day woke up and wondered just where the heck the last 30 years went....

Every payday (week, bi-weekly, monthly, however you get it) you get more money. NO ONE can give you more time. No one, who is honest, will promise you more time. (Those that do, are selling something!)

Decades before the Internet let you search the country for what you want, I got the "bug" for a certain rare pistol. I would fine ONE for sale, about every half dozen years or so. I couldn't "afford" it when it was $395. I couldn't afford the next one I found, at $695. I couldn't afford one at $995. When I found the next one, for $1500, I took out a personal loan. The gun cost more than the beater car I was driving at the time. I got it, and the wife got a nice bed with the rest of the loan. Almost 35 years ago, now, and I still have that gun, and she still has the headboard and frame.;)

Trust me on this, it only SEEMS like you have all the time in the world to get what you want, when you can "afford" it. Keep a roof over your family's head, keep them fed. Keep the lights on, and see they have shoes and clothes when they need (not just want) them. Everything else is a negotiable priority.

There are a LOT of Hi Powers out there, they will be around, and available for a long time to come. What they won't be is cheap. You can still get a Luger if you are willing to pay the asking price. The longer you wait, the more it will cost you.

Your call, I wish you well.

Re: the stories of loose GI .45's
A while back in my NRA magazine they did a short blurb on the Remington M53. This was a novel .45 ACP pistol that the Navy tested, and they were impressed enough to consider adopting it, but it never came to pass for other reasons.

Anyway, one point that really caught my attention was where they were testing this new gun compared to the standard issue 1911. During the accuracy tests, the 1911 shot less than an inch at 25 yards, and shot a 1.36 inch group at 50 yards! https://www.forgottenweapons.com/early-automatic-pistols/remington-m53/
The Remington gun didn't do as well since it was already half wore out from previous testing, but its fixed barrel would probably lend itself to great accuracy as well.

Interesting that Remington enlarged a compact pistol to .45 size, as Savage had done with their entrant in the 1911 trials.

Today, we see a lot of compact versions of full-sized gun, usually arrived at by just cutting off the ends, but to scale up a small gun is pretty rare.

This post has kind of run amuck from the original announcement that Hi Powers have been discontinued so let me engage in a little nostalgia. I am currently visiting in Texas where my buddy and I go out each day (and often night) to do away with the large number of hogs invading his properties. We also make regular trips to his private range for fun ( I brought about thirty Firearms with me) where just yesterday I was shooting a Mk II, Mk III and a beautiful Browning marked tangent Captian...all of which shot to point of aim and left big one hole groups.
1911's (my GI Colt will shoot 1" groups at ten yards all day from a rest) and High Powers cannot be beat for an enjoyable time on the range. When we trap hogs a HP can come in handy for a bunch of hogs in a 30' corral trap, and be fun to boot.

Of my two HPs, the one most customized is a Capitan that went through the C&S shop.
That tangent sight is just retro cool to the max....

First time poster here, so please be kind........

I'm a traditionalist and I stand on the side of those that do not think the Hi Power is an outdated relic from the past.... As others have said, it may be a relic and outdated if you believe the 1911 is past its prime. I appreciate modern, polymer and have my share of those including Glocks and Walther, but my heart sides with thin, steel pistols. I also take exception with those folks that claim the Hi Power is overpriced. Take a look at Sigs or HK's, you can spend a bundle on them and their fans don't think they're overpriced.

I'm sad to see them go, but I did have success yesterday in purchasing a brand new Hi Power Standard. They're still out there if search for them.

A Glock is among my carry pistols, but a Commander 1911 and Novaks Hi Power are my primaries......

The CZ75B SA is similar in appearance to the Hi Power, but the reach to both the trigger and thumb safety is longer. For those with small hands, or short fingers the Hi Power is more comfortable. The CZ is also 3 oz heavier. Having sAid that, the CZ is a great weapon and has very light recoil... It's a range pistol for me....
