Browning hi power/cz 75

I curious about the thickness issue. I thought the 75 would be chunkier than it is, especially since I ditched the thick thumb rest grips. I don`t have a HiPower to compare with. Would it be possible for one of you guys who has both to measure slide and grip thickness and maybe circumference of the HiPower? Pretty please. :D My 75B with Hogue cocobolo grips measures 1 1/8" thick at it`s widest point(BTW it was at *least* 1/8" wider with stock grips). That`s only 1/16" thicker than my single column polymer Ruger P-97 (the Ruger is actually thicker if you count the Hogue grip sleeve`s palm swells) and 1/8" thicker than my Keltec P-11. The slide measures about 7/8"(actually 29/32"),or roughly 3/16" less than the P-97 and 1/8" less than the Keltec(!). I wouldn`t have believed these measurments myself if I hadn`t just measured it myself with a machinists rule! I`ve never measured a HiPower but if it`s really much slimmer than this I can see why folks like to carry em! Marcus

Again ,thank you so much guys for all your help/advise!!! Just saw an HP in 40cal, anyone with info out there? Hope to hear more comments!

Clarence, it is not surprising but the BHP 40 S&W is my favorite in that caliber. Mine is very accurate and soft shooting. Is there a downside? Yes, the BHP 40 S&W has a very heavy recoil spring but once you master racking the slide on it is a great pistol. Regards, Richard.

Marcus - you were right! Goes to show what personal bias can do to seemingly objective judgement. I had just always felt that the Hi-Power was the slimmer gun.

Not having a CZ on hand to compare it to, I used the stock measurements provided by both manufacturers - assuming they measured the widest point of both guns - the CZ was 33mm and the Hi-Power was 34.925mm

Not a wild difference to be sure; but serves me right for assuming.

Actually I was off a bit too on that. With the Hogue cocobolo grips mine measures 1 3/16" at widest not 1 1/8". I guess I was reading the "tenths side" by mistake. Doh. The other measurments were right though. Anyway, that`s 31mm so the Hogues trim 2mm width off the standard grips. BTW with the thumb rest grips it measures 37mm (!)toward the rear of the grip so it would actually be thicker than the Browning in that case. Perception of size really is a strange thing! :) Marcus

Hmmmm, the stock Browning has those thick walnut grips, where mine has the slim Spegel grips. I am sure that had something to do with my perception.... you've got me wondering how thick mine is now.

I like em both a lot. I think the CZ will stand up to lots of hot ammo better. The HP is a bit trimmer. Both are fine shooters out of the box, both can be "tuned" to be very fine shooters. Smaller slide on the CZ is harder to rack when you practice drills (neither jams much for real).

Again thanks to all for your respose to my query! Just narrowed down my choice between a HP MKIII in 40cal (9mm already sold out) and an HP Standard w/adjustable sights in 9mm. Also, an HP Capitan model is left in my dealer's inventory. Guys please send me you comments on these choices. I need to decide before my dealer runs out of HPs.

<------is stupid squared :(. I passed on a Silver Chrome HP in .40 that would have been a twin to my 9mm BHP. I am an idiot and deserved to be mistreated. I throw myself on the mercy of the forum and beg forgiveness for my arrogance. Like the little man with a shovel behind the Elephant in the parade, I pledge to follow a certain talk show hostess for the next 2 weeks :(
Clarence, save yourself from my fate!!!(Hint which HP do you like the best-get it NOW b4 it's too late)(Hint, hint: You don't see too many Capitans, and I think you're going to see fewer)

BrokenArrow:

I disagree. While I did not measure that "thinness" of the CZ-75 slide or the BHP slide, what makes (for me) the BHP harder to rack is the fact that the hammer spring tension is extremely high compared to that of the CZ-75.

I have to say that the BHP has the hardest slide/hammer to retract of all the semi-auto pistols I've shot, touched, handled, etc. especially with a little sweat on my hand and fingers.

The best test is usually my wife. She can retract CZ-75 easily. No so with BHP, again, especially with a little sweat on her hands. Usually, she has to thumb-cock the hammer first (which is not easy for her either). And, she isn't exactly a weak woman (she was a rower in her college rowing team, which was number one in the country).

BTW, the best slide retraction ergonomics I ever saw was on the Browning BDM. The rear area of the slide (the smooth part right after the slide serrations) is actually a bit thicker than the rest of the slide and provides a good handle for the fingers.

I guess what makes the BHP so hard is the combination of strong tension AND thin, smooth slide that is very hard to grasp.

Get the 9mm version BHP. I was at the store yesterday picking up the new Ruger P97 and couldn't resist putting on layaway one of the last new BHPs/MKIII/adj sight/walnut grip models they had. Price was $529. with one hi cap. I have owned both cals in BHP but much prefer the 9mm. More accurate - better feel - and thats the cal the pistol was designed for.
