broke my own rule

I just broke one of my own rules: never sell a gun.

I bought an AutoOrdnance 1911-A1 last year but before I had shot it much I found a used S&W 1911 (govt. model) that I had to have. I already had a commander length S&W so I knew I was going to like the full-size one. Sure enough, I've shot the full-size S&W a lot more than the AO. So I finally decided to part with the AO. I even found it a good home: a fellow who was looking for a project gun to play with and learn about 1911s.

What do you all think? Will I be back next month (or next year) wishing I hadn't sold the AO?

I used to have that rule when I started collecting. But now, if it doesn't make me happy or shoot the way I want it to then I'd rather someone else enjoy it then have it take up space in my safe.

I just sold my CDP ultra ...said I never would but things are topsy turvy right now and since the wife left and took what she wanted (gun wise)...I had to decide witch 3"1911 I was going to keep...pretty much one for you ,one for me type of thing with the odd man being sold...God I hope I chose right...I miss it already but I will have a chance to resupply the safe now...

Look at it as making room for future purchases...:D

I regret everything I sell sooner or later - But at the same time, I'm doing it to get something I want even more. So, it's exciting too. The thrill of the hunt....

And sometimes, I won't know how much I will be happy with something, until I buy it, and play with it for a while. If I'm not happy with it, I sell it without a second thought.

If it is a stock gun and i am not using it I don't think twice. I can always buy the same thing down the road if I miss it.

At first I thought I would be sentimental about firearms. now as long as I am ending up with more I don't care. more fun, more dollar value, more something. If I trade and walk away thinking I have less I would likely regret it.

From the Newbie

Kerberos, I'm new to the site, but definitely not new to selling guns. I know that I can not afford to own every gun I want, but by buying, selling, and trading I sure get to try a lot out. Some obviously are off limits. Five or six passed down, but the others are fair game when another must have catches my eye.

I have an A-O 1911A1, and I recently bought a Colt 1911 made during WWI

Now I need a Colt series 70 that I can shoot. After getting that old Colt 1911, man, there's nothing like a Colt 1911, hate them or love them

I could sell my A-O and fund about half the Colt I want to buy, but something is making me keep the A-O. I can have it worked on and then drop it down a flight of stairs and it wouldn't bug me. I like that

I have sold or traded stuff that makes me sick, the one that hurts the most was my Colt L.W. Commander. I still kick myself for that one, but need to move things around. I have a Kimber CDP 4" carry gun, will never sell that nor my custom made M1A.

I still wish I had that Colt.

I NEVER, NEVER, NEVER sell or trade ANY gun now. The few time I did I regretted it. The worse case was a Colt built , U.S Govnt property marked 1911 Mfg'd in 1918 in excellent condition. I wanted a shooter, not a collector. Traded it for new in box S&W 645 when they first came out. Love the Smith, but who knew the Government would switch to Berettas and the value of the old Colts would go through the roof.

I didn't think I would miss a AO 1911 A Colt, Kimber ,DanWasson , sure but not AO . Even less since you bought a S&W You did fine

I've never sold a gun that I didn't regret selling just a little bit. My problem is, simply, that I'm living on a budget that does not allow me to own an unlimited quantity of guns. Having said that, I've only made one sale that I decided was an irrevocable blunder and I rectified that by buying another gun of the same make and model.

Don't know about you, but there is only so much room in my safe and in my budget. I will gladly sell something I don't shoot or carry for something I will.

Likewise, an upgrade is always welcome. I have sold Springfield and Para 1911s to buy Kimber 1911s, and have sold a Taurus and numerous ILS S&Ws to buy pre-lock S&Ws.

Some may disagree with my specific choices , but I hope you can grasp the concept.

And I once threw a Rossi into a lake. That was an overall improvement to my collection. :)

If you think about it, its not really if you sell or trade, its more about what you get in return. Some guns are rare, unique, sought after etc, but usually the regret stems from a poor trade or a desperate sale and not necessarily because of the loss of the gun itself. If you sell a gun for more than you paid for example, you could probably go buy another one of the same model with money left over. Because I do things like that, I don't regret any guns that I sold or trade because I made sure I got something equal or BETTER in return. For example I traded a Savage model 99 G 300 sav (takedown) for a Winchester model 70 243 featherweight from 1957 and I insisted the guy give me $50, he gave $44 due to $20sl. The model 70 is an aluminum butt plate and the metal is nice. Of course the savage 99 was nice, and a takedown, and not drilled or tapped, original butt plate, etc but in that scenario, it was a good trade and therefor I do not regret it.

Mostly I only sell guns I hate. The guns I hate are the ones that don't work the way they are supposed to and are too much trouble to fix. If a weapon does not work the way it is supposed to then there is no point in keeping it around. Even if I am not using the gun I can always give it to the kids.

I always sell with Caveat's too.

I do sometimes sell when upgrading.

Early on in my gun enthusiast days, I discovered that I was becoming a collector. It was about that time that I also discovered that I really liked .45's in the 1911 platform. I have kept every gun I have ever bought with the exception of one. That particular gun was a "bargain" and I just didn't like it from the moment it came in my door. I quickly traded it for a 1911. Even with my affinity for 1911's, I still managed to collect other guns of different types and different calibers. I have my favorite EDC gun and the rest of the guns get rotated to the range so they all get some exercise and cleaning. Only problem with a large collection is one needs a large collection of ammo to feed said collection. I will not have to endure "seller's remorse" as I am most fortunate that I do not have to sell one gun to obtain another. FYI, it didn't happen over night.
