Breaking in New Barrel

Lapping barrels by industry standards requires measurements be made to identify tight spots and make inner diameters meet some spec for their entire length.

All barrels are not lapped.

Fire lapping is no proper substitute for lapping, but it has worked wonders on several button rifled barrels I have that copper fouled when they saw the box of ammo laying on the bench beside them.

To the OP, I suggest heading over to the "Art of the Rifle: General" subforum here on TFL and read the sticky started by forum member DZ. He grabbed a lot of noted barrel maker Gale McMillan's wisdom from when he was alive and posting here and put it in 1 thread. No matter which camp you eventually settle in, knowing points from both sides to make an informed decision for yourself is important.
