Brady Campaign Planning Another Name Change - Backs Off AWB

There are some real strategic problems for them here. They've always attracted support from the far edge of one side of the political aisle, and moving to the center only weakens them. There's no support in the middle.

I tend to disagree with this part of your post.

The fringe has proven to not provide enough suport for them. But make no
mistake, the fringe will ALWAYS support them.

They are going after the middle fence sitters now.

If they can gather enough of them... and add them to the fringe, they will get stronger.

Of COURSE they support the AWB and EVERY other anti-gun measure they can think of.
The "Brady Bunch" by whatever name they're calling themselves this year are GROUND ZERO in the fight to destroy your second amendment rights.

"They" aren't the ones we need to worry about

The President said yesterday (according to the Washington Times) that
"A lot of gun owners would agree that AK-47s belong in the hands of soldiers, not in the hands of criminals,” Mr. Obama said at the annual National Urban League convention in New Orleans. “They belong on the battlefield of war, not on the streets of our cities.”

Now today I see op-eds (and supporting comments) on the internet like this one http://www.foxnews.com/opinion/2012/07/26/why-own-assault-rifle/print and even in my local paper in what I thought was a highly pro-2A state from supposed gun owners who fall right in line with that narrative. And we all remember from the last AWB that the "not in the hands of criminals" slogan was used to effectively drive a wedge in the pro RKBA community (remember Jim Zumbo), and it looks like it all over again.

Granted these 'hard core expert casual shooters' were probably cherry picked by the editors, but I could not believe how many comments I read from other gun owners agreeing with the baseless and ignorant claims that nobody needs an AR-15 or AK etc except to have fun and/ or overcompensate for something, that AW's are in fact worthless for home defense, and that concealed carry is also a false-hope because the average gun owner doesn't have the proper training and almost 1/3 wouldn't have the guts to defend themselves or their homes anyway.

I'm not going to offer any added opinion right now, but I do hope this helps shed some light on the situation.

It's 97 degrees right now. I need to step outside and cool off!

Frankly, I don't trust them at all...

And you are wise not too.....

They want an almost total ban on civilian firearm ownership. While they may or may not claim to want an AWB, they do want to create a crack in frame work of ownership. Once they get a crack into the frame through banning or restricting ownership, they will work to widen that crack.

At one point, they thought they could get an out and out ban, now their approach is death by a thousand cuts. This is attempt at yet another cut. While they don't pack the punch they used to, any cut, no matter how small is still a cut.

No matter the reboot, their goal hasn't changed. They have always lied with a smile on their face and you know what, they are smiling right now...

They just refuse to beleive that they have been left behind in the heel dust of the the pro gun shift in society.

Looks like we need a commercial

Mr. President this is an AK-47 in a law abiding citizens hands
It has done no harm or has not been used to commit a crime
It protects me form those who would do me harm
Mr. President, Mayor Bloomberg why don't you go after the criminals who misuse them instead of law abiding citizens who are not the problem

I can empathize with Mr. Gross' point of view. I too would like for criminals not to have access to firearms.

But look at the government's war on drugs and the success they've had on eliminating illegal drug use in this country.

Why would any reasonable individual think that a war on guns would have any different result?

The war on drugs could be easily won but we have no political will power in order to do so.. Other nations have virtually no drug probems because if you use drugs and get caught they lop your head off or you automatically go to a prison where you cant survive...

Still they have no measureable drug problems..

As far as illegal use of guns... again its lack of political will power and just plain lack of will... Encourage open and concealed carry, give discounts and tax breaks to those that do.

Encourage community policing as was done in the old west (not lynching) and a simplified and rapid capital punishment for armed felons... You escape prison, "Wanted Dead or Alive" goes into effect..

We do have tools that could be used to allow greater freedoms and greater security. We always ignore that the police will never truly be enough no matter how many we hire nor how well we equip and train them... Want to slow the madness way down then enforce law as a community and encourage family values and helping neighbors.

Its not that we have to be in each others business but when you dont even know your neighbors name its really kind of part of the overall problem...

I was thinking about this, listening to a pundit say that assault rifles should be illegal.

So how would this work?

1. The smart AWB supported admit the last one didn't work because of existing stocks met much of the demand through the second hand market.
2. New weapons of equal efficacy but without the cosmetic crap were made and available in most of the country.

Thus, all should be illegal and existing ones confiscated and there should be mandatory turn ins.

1. This would cost a zillion dollars to do. See Canada.
2. It wouldn't work. Massive noncompliance. Attempts to use force based on high determining of who had them would probably lead to resistance by quite a few (let's not bluster).
3. Tremendous 4th Amend. problems to forcibly search homes based on what evidence for the warrant. I sold mine - thank you.

So, the emotional blather by pundits is just ridiculous. Better mental health availability is cheaper and would work better.

Stressfire
Had my shirt blown up by the wind a day or two ago - totally exposed my pistol - I darn near had a panic attack, while legal to OC in Ohio, I'm no activist

Why do you let them bully you like that? Do you let them bully you about having a cell phone?, pocket knife? car? whatever?

You can only be bullied, if you allow yourself to be bullied. You can only be offended if you take offence...got it..STOP IT. OC is a totally legal activity, quit letting some unknown "they" bully you.

Anybody else notice which rifle he chose to talk about

I thought it was more interesting that POTUS chose the AK to talk about "should be in the hands of soldiers". He chose the enemies weapon that has been used by enemies of America for over 40 years, to shoot at us, not the AR/M16 he focused on the AK and how (IMHO) his guy, that is national armies and their soldiers should only have the AK....
