Book Hide

...anyone ever cutout a book to hide a gun. I'm sitting next to my bookcase in my scivies, with a coffee; not a pretty picture; and thinking that the book idea may be a good one.

It's one that has been done before and seems to be fairly successful. Good place to hide stuff, as most BGs aren't into literature, it seems. Goes well with the "concealed in plain sight" concept.

A lot of times burglars go for the obvious, especially if they're doing a kick-the-back-door and grab what you can job. Often, they hit the master bedroom for jewelry, cash, guns, etc., and maybe grab some of the better electronics, then take off.

If they stick around for even a few minutes, however, they will really trash a place, dumping all your drawers on the floor, throwing clothes out of closets so they can see what else is in there, AND sweeping books from a shelf onto the floor to see what falls out from between them and what is behind them. IMHO, you can do better stashing things in the linen closet, food pantry, utility room, etc. - places not as likely to yield loot as living areas.

Most people conceive of a burglar rifling through their clothing drawers and leaving things a little mussed, but relatively intact. That's one way you can spot a staged event. In reality, the burglar(s) can leave the place looking like a tornado hit it.

Strange. I've gone on hundreds of burglary calls, and have never run across anything like that. I've handled vandalism complaints somewhat like that, but not burglaries.

I've seen it. My grandparents' house was hit one Christmas (they were out of town). Everything was turned upside-down inside. EVERYTHING.

Been done a lot with books, day planners, etc. I plan to make one from a Bible for my Steyr. Just don't forget and lay it down and leave it!!!:eek::eek:

I can think of other books better suited to the task. I can assume you're a believer if you own one. Think about it.

Be careful with the use of books or other places to hide weapons.

If you have children about, or of your sons/daughters bring their children or their friends children, you can set your self up for a AD if one discovers your book hide (or any other kind of hide.)

If you wish to use a book, one way is for you to get a real one that fits into what you normaly read. The slow way is to carve each page out one by one (and that IS slow.) The up side is it will fit into what you do very well and if you have many books, hard for a burgler to discover the right book. The downside is, again, it's slow to make your own.

If you buy a pre-made one, the upside is it's probably a much higher quality product than what you could make. Downside is every good thief would be aware of these fakes. It can also be hard to get such a book in your interest.

No. I would need something the size of a telephone book.

I did just that last summer. It was a LONG process, I took a utility knife and cut around 20 pages at a time and kept a few of the previously cut pages down to use as a template for the next set. I got impatient about halfway through and tried to simplify the pattern and ended up having to trim a lot at the end so there was enough relief for the front sight and hammer. The trimming made a huge mess and I still find shreds of paper around on occasion.

I would recommend if anyone was to do it themselves to use a hard cover book (with all the pages cut out the phone book was very flimsy) and to do it by gluing all the pages together first with a glue stick before cutting. Also, the phone book pages were so thin sometimes they just tear instead of cutting, even with a sharp knife, probably didn't help that I started with a thick gun and a smallish phone book.

I had an idea to rig up a set of metal plates to clamp the edges of the pages you want to cut together and then use a jigsaw or something, but never got around to it.

Instead of an actual Bible, get a Bible cover like all the Evangelicals have. Fill that with some kind of plastic foam; this is much easier to carve than however many sheets of paper. Hardback Bibles are kind of heavy anyway so this is unlikely to cause any suspicion. If you're actually a Christian and happen to have various other books on religion and theology, putting the filled cover on a shelf with those books means that it will probably be completely ignored.

Another alternative to actually cutting out each page would be to cut out a large rectangle from the inside (so it looks like paper from the outside), then put some kind of foam on the inside, being easier to cut.

I gutted a small day planner and carried in it. Worked very well, kept a couple of speed strips under the elastic webbing.

That's your opinion, forte, and I pay no heed to it. Contrary to your blind assumption, I am NOT a "believer" nor do I currently own a bible, but they can be bought cheaply at Wal-Mart. Also contrary to your opinion, it's a GREAT idea - who would suspect a bible of holding a flaming instrument of instant judgement and death?

Glue the pages together, cut the opening, use some thin ply to stiffen the covers, and you got it.

Naw, glue all the pages together first, then use a band saw to go through one side and cut the pocket. A little white glue/paper mache fixes the entrance kerf.

Anybody who's actually read one.
Surprisingly, I have - extensively. A little long, good plot, lots of characters, the good guys win in the end. Nice fiction novel.

I don't deny it happens, my point is that it is not the norm, and one shouldn't worry a whole lot about rare events when planning. Doesn't mean you should totally ignore them, but one needs to keep them in perspective.

Wow, I've been burgled twice in two different states [S.C. & Co.],
and was "dumped" both times. Seems the norm to me. JMHO:D
