Bolt gun in 7.62x39?

I happen to stumbled upon (online) a CZ527 in 7.62x39mm. Which begs the question. What other bolt guns are available in this caliber? I would love a bolt that shoots a cheap but pretty strong round.

It seems the CZ527 is getting mixed reviews but for the most part very favorable. I admit to knowing next to nothing about CZ firearms in general so forgive the dumb question. Are CZs good rifles?

I want something that I can plink with (other than my .22lr) and do a little hog hunting and not break the bank.

Any recommendations or should I stick with a .223 and share my AR stash?

Savage makes a 'SCOUT" bolt-action rifle called the 10 FCM which is available in both .308 Win and 7.62x39mm ... Now all the pics have scopes on them like Leupold (I have no idea who makes scout scopes or who makes good ones/etc. it is a subject i never saw a lot of info on... )

But I would imagine, if the M1A Scout Squad and Socom 16/ Socom II can be used and advertised for use with Aimpoints (Or EOTech) why not do it with the Savage Scout right?

Also I thought too there was a Ruger scout in 7.62x39, the Gunsite Scout on their website is only coming up as .308 so I don't know.

The problem for me is, and I am going to do this one damn day I am not as broke as I somehow became, I think a Saiga rifle in 7.62x39mm would make the best 7.62x39mm scout rifle. Just so reasonable for quality, plus you have options for an Ultimak top "scout" rail for a scope OR a quality red dot/reflex sight, my personal idea of a quad rail which still allows for your reflex sight plus a fore grip (I like the idea of an Aimpoint, Magpul AFG, XTM panels on the side, and whatever other accessory you need) and you got a great scout rifle aka Ranch Rifle with a hard hitting, cheap round that is almost unbreakable or unbeatable as far as reliability- it's a Russian Saiga AK rifle.

Remington 799

The Remington 799 mini mauser was available for a couple of years recently...there are still some out there
:)

All of my CZ's have been very good firearms, once the quirks get worked out.

My 527 is fun to shoot and shoulders easily, only being about 5.5# in weight. The action took a while to smooth out, just like the handguns. I had an issue with the rounds not feeding, and discovered all the mags had a burr that needed some Dremel work.

Mine doesn't like harder 'military' primers, such as Wolf. Sometimes it takes a couple hits to light them off. CZ USA sent me out a new pin spring which helped, but didn't solve the glitch. I may switch to Federal primers next go-round.

Now if you want something in the $300 range for hogs or whatever, have a look at a Saiga. Mine was dead reliable.

I had a CZ-527, and the only "quirk" I worked out were the delta-shaped webs ahead of the TG loop - I removed them.

Other than the TG webs, detachable magazine & integral scope mount dovetails, they're mini-Mauser 98's.

It was accurate due to the set trigger, and it's relatively light weight made a very nice walking varminter.

Burris/CZ rings are half the price of CZ rings with twice the quality, BTW.

.

Thanks guys, I think I'm gonna scan the classifieds for a Saiga or maybe a Savage. The whole idea is to be able to run cheap ammo for plinking and better ammo for hunting.

hulley,

That's what I'd do with my money, if that is any significance ... Saiga's may be semi rather than bolt action, but for the redonkulously cheap price, redonk reliability, the 7.62 round is hard hard hitting up to about 200m , pretty cheap, and you can do with the Saiga what you want (be it make it into an "assault rifle" and convert it, make it looking like a real Russian AK or even use some AR style Parts,) or you can make it a scout rifle, do lots of stuff, scope it, reflex/red dot, scout mount the optic, etc. Then a sling on it and you'll be taking it everywhere.

I love my CZ 527M, great shooting carbine, load and cast for it, too. Only thing I had to work out was how to share range time with other firearms. ;)

Ruger

Ruger made the 77 Mk II in x39 for a few years. I have an early stainless/boatpaddle stock verison. Of course I load for it and my best stuff will shoot into about 1.5" at 100 yds. Domestic, brass cased factory ammo is nearly as good. I have not shot import/steel case through this rifle. The rifle wears a Leupold 2-7x variable.

For our 150 lb deer, it is enough gun, but it's range is a tad limited. When I hunt this rifle, it is from tree stands and in woodland. Both Bamaboy and myself kill deer with it, and the longest shot to date is about 60 yds. It kills well and comparison to the .30-30 is valid.

This rifle has a 20" bbll and is light and handy overall. Ruger, Savage, and CZ all chambered bolt rifles in x39, as did Rem with their version of the Mini Mauser. I have also seen one import Mauser chambered in x39, but it was a full size action and rather clunky/chunky in appearance and workmanship.

The CZ's seem good rifles. I do not own one, but have handled several of their .22's and they seemed will made and fnished.

The Mini-Mauser is being imported again but not by Remington. Find a local Century Arms International dealer and he can get you one.

i really want that Savage 10 FCM Scout in 7.62x39.... adding a nice $100 Harris Bipod and scout scope, I found a cheap but awesome-sounding Hi-Lux Leatherwood scout sope... it seems just so awesome and Savage is such a great rifle.

I am concerned because, it's not cheap. It's not Sako expensive but its not cheap, and what about ammo. I am concerned, will it shoot the 2000 rounds of Herter's 7.62x39mm i have from a Cabelas sale? will it shoot ANY cheap steel ammo, or will it be brand specific tc. {Some people claim Bushmasters cant shoot cheap .223, or steel .223, or Bushmaster just plain in company wide cannot shoot Wolf/Tula/Whoever.}. Also if it CAN shoot ALL ammo, will it be reduced to shooting as poorly accurate as those ammos support.. that would suck... Because the Savage has the AccuTrigger AND Savage's AccuStock (which is really not to be understated, Savage AccuStock is AWESOME and not installed on many of their rifles).

I have no doubt this rifle is the BOMB, I am also all about having fine stuff including fine firearms. But I just see the Saiga being so cheaper and having a lot of options as for configuration.

(OP i just want to make sure, you know, it's a semi auto right? It looks like a black hunting rifle, black receiver with black plastic stock and forearm, but it's an AK in disguise, and can easily be made into an AK assault rifle looking thing. You wanted bolt action, its not bolt action. But its still the best of the best for 7.62x39 in bang for buck).

ruger

Ruger made their "Frontier" model of the 77MkII in the x39mm caliber. The frontier was a matte blue, walnut stocked, bolt rifle with short barrel, equipped with a forward factory rib that could take a scout scope. I have never handled one but suspect the rib accepted ruger rings. The Frontier model did not last long.

Australian International Arms 'Improved Enfield' Rifles are out there however no longer imported due to the stock is made in Vietnam and the metal is made in N Korea. Quite a few made it over in 7.62X39. Beautiful butter smoth bolt Enfield copy that uses AK magazines. I treasure mine. The teak wood looks like it is made out of 1 piece of wood and the parkerized finish is flawless all the way down to the chromed barrel and supressor. It came with a scope rail, leather sling, and a canvs and eather gun case. All for $700.
