bolt action .22LR

im looking into getting a bolt action .22LR on a black friday sale. my budget is limited. ive been looking at the Savage Arms Mark II model but not completely sold on it yet...Any advice on what to do?

Buy the Savage,,,

If it fits you and it's in your budget,,,
Buy the Savage.

Savage makes nice rifles,,,
More accurate than most of their owners.

The Savage will be a great rifle. I just recently shot a CZ 452 and was extremely impressed. Very nice stock, well made and very accurate. I'm thinking about getting the Ultra-Lux as my Christmas gift to myself.

Dont overthink it

Get the Savage Mark II, don't worry about other options. I know it is counterintuitive, but the Mark II is a fantastic rifle for the price.

I bought one about a year ago and have loved every shot. I have put A LOT of rounds through it.

Savage mark ii's are crap. The finish is sub-par and the magazine is about as awkward as it can be. It is what it is....a cheap rifle.

So Mdd.. Do you have anything constructive to add to the conversation? Or you thought you would just chime in with your negativity?

Way to further everyone's knowledge and understanding with that gem.

Savage Arms Mark II

Savage Arms Mark II. I have one and it's a tack driver. Awesome fit finish, it doesn't get any better! :)

MDD... Quite a profound statement. Have you owned or fired one? Noticed that you didn't offer any alternative brand or make? Just your negativity. Why waste words when you have nothing to say!:)

If your budget is limited, the Savage MKII is about the most accurate rifle you can get for the dollar. Get the accutrigger and you'll be happy.

However, I do agree that the fit and finish are not the greatest. Compare one to a 77/22 or a T-Bolt and you will see what I mean. Magazines are just stamped steel, but they function.

This is my old MKII, pre accutrigger but with a Rife Basix sear. 0.3" groups at 50 yards with match grade ammo is typical. ETA: but the Savage is less than half the cost of the Ruger or Browning and will outshoot them (although just barely with the T-Bolt :D )

How good is good enough !!!

You are certainly entitled to your opinion as we are entitled to ours. I don't like bashing any gun unless they are unsafe. I can talk the language of .22LR anytime with you but the answer is still the same; Savage is good !!!

I own a string of high end as well as not so high and let me assure you that Savage makes a bunch of .22LR's that would suit you quite well. Will meet and/or exceed your expectations. I know for a fact, that they will shoot better than you can. .... ;)

Not saying that there aren't better choices that your budget might not allow for. .... :)

Be Safe !!!

PAKR has it right, 100%. The Marlin 60 semi is one hell of a gun, and a good used one would be hard to beat for a responsible young man.

I clean the action on my late 1970's vintage Marlin 60 by removing the stock and soaking the action in kerosene overnight, a trick my grandfather showed me, in case you are out of Hoppes #9. Then, brush the carbon and gunk out with an old toothbrush and or pipe cleaners and oil it up with 3/1 oil or Rem-oil. And you are ready for several thousand more trouble free rounds! I used to spend hours after school as a kid hunting squirrels, raccoons, bunnys and partridge with mine.

Load it up with CCI Stingers and it makes one hell of a rapid fire home defense weapon too!!

The Savage MkII I bought my honorary nephew is more accurate than my Ruger 77/22 and left handed to boot. The only thing I would fault is the roughness of the factory iron sights. I might have more credibility if the kid didn't shoot such mall groups with them.

Personally I'm a fan of the older Marlins, but I haven't played with scoped savage to compare it to them. I will say that I played with a open-sighted Savage and it was minute of clay pigeon at 50 yards. That's about the same as my open sighted Marlins can do with me in control of them. Seem to be a good value, but I just lean towards the older Marlins. I also don't have enough experience with the newer xt-22's so I wouldn't suggest them to you either. My Marlins go back as far as 1972, up to the middle 1980's. Good luck with the hordes of shoppers and post your first target group! :D

I replied with exactly what the op should know about the savage mark ii's in his price range. I'm sorry if it hurt your feelings but the truth about the lower end savage mark ii's is what he deserves. Yes they make nice rifles but "limited budget" potentially excludes him from the price range of those nice rifles. The low end mark ii's have a crappy finish which is prone to corrosion. The stock fit is sub-standard. The magazine is a cheap piece of nothing that protrudes awkwardly and is often in the way. The adjustment on the sights barely works. Jump on me if you want. I'm telling the truth about it & I will not apologize for that.

Haters gotta hate. Nevermind that the Savage MKII BTVS in NO WAY fits that description. Let's just lump them all in...
