Blackhawk grips

Im having a hard time finding grips for my guns. Mine both Are new model blued guns with the internal lock. I would like some like the wooden hogue with the finger grips any recommendations?

The internal lock only protrudes on the thinner 'New Vaquero' frame...

Any grip designed for the Blackhawk XRN-3RED grip frame since 1973 should fit regardless of the lock...Some will fit better than others due to slight variations in castings...The suggestion of having custom grips made is a good one...

That said, I have no idea if Hogue makes anything with finger grooves to fit a Blackhawk...

I suggest contacting them...

I love the Hogue rubber grips they make for the Blackhawk. Fit my hands perfectly. I installed a set on my first Blackhawk with the older frame with no problem. I coworker who also has one with the older frame who went with the Hogue wooden grips with finger groves that attach to the frame the same way the rubber grips do.

I didn't do my research enough when I bought a 45 Convertible with the internal lock, also bought another set of Hogue rubber grips to go on it. The grips will fit the frame (not perfectly but good enough) but there was no way to attach the grips to the frame. The U piece that fits in frame that you screw the grips to has interference problem with the internal lock.

I solved this by drilling and tapping a 10-32 hole in the center of the butt and using a longer screw. The aluminum the frame was made of was very machineable. Probably shot around 500 round with this setup maybe 1/3 of these extra power Blackhawk Only loads. I did an inspection after each shooting session for a while and haven't found any problems or anything that concerns me. The screw has remained straight and removes and goes back in easily. Someday it may require a thread insert but for now it is good.

This solution worked for me but I am sure not right for everyone.

Hope this helps.

Thank u for the help I really don't want to send my frame in. I was just on the hogue web sight reading a little deeper and I found a comment on there that says the new grips xrn-3 I think now fits guns with or without the internal lock I sent them an email asking if they will fit my gun since its a brand new one with the lock. If they say they will fit I'll get a pair and let y'all know the out come

Email from hogue

As per the person that emailed me today any grip with a part number starting with 83 mono or cowboy grips will fit new Blackhawks with the internal lock they said they have been making them to fit the new guns since the first of the year.

For Ruger Blackhawks and Super Blackhawks, in fact all Ruger Single Actions, I heartily recommend CaryC's grips:

They are beautifully made and perfect for magnums or standard calibers. There are none better. Many of my guns were stocked by Lett, but they are no longer in business.

This is my old Flat Top .357 Magnum stocked in mesquite by CaryC:

Well, its my own personal opinion that neither rubber grips nor finger groove grips belong on a Single Action.

In fact, I believe rubber grips are the creation of the Devil himself, having had many unpleasant experiences with the things.

But, to each his own.

I'm with Bob...

I used to use a set of Uncle Mike's on my SBH to 'tame' recoil, but then I started making my own...Once I learned that a well fitting set of wood works as well or better than the gummi-grips, I was hooked...

And definitely no Finger grooves...

I can not shoot near as accurate with the little standard grips, just feels awkward. These fill my hands and give me a great repeatable grip. And make one hand shooting much better.

Now that looks sweet coop I'm with the rest of u on the rubber gummy grips I had them on a 1911 and hate them but I do love the look of the wood with the finger groves

I do love the looks of some of those wood grips but my Blackhawk is used primarily for hunting and I find the hogue gives me a better hold in wet enviroments.

Well45...I disagree. The standard grips are too small for my hands and I dont want a DA...and lucky for me I dont have to listen to you...as you said!

Everybody who puts those big ugly grips on their sixgun says the grip is too small. My hands are big too. The problem is your technique, not the grip. Tuck that pinky under like God and Sam Colt intended. You get better control and recoil forces do not get transmitted directly into your palm like they do with the big funky ones. Those big grips also put you in a terrible position for cocking the hammer. Lots and lots of reasons not to use them, if you know what you're doing.

Anybody ever see a big custom five-shot Ruger .475 or .500 with oversized grips? No. If the big over-sized grips were the right tool for the job, those guns would have them.

...lucky for me I dont have to listen to you...
Yeah, I'd hate for anybody to read this with an open mind and willingness to do it the right way.
