black hurricane survivors cry racism

""No one is going to tell me it wasn't a race issue," said New Orleans evacuee Patricia Thompson, 53, who is now living in College Station, Texas. "Yes, it was an issue of race. Because of one thing: when the city had pretty much been evacuated, the people that were left there mostly was black.""

Somebody help me out here.
Were we or were we not discussing people being forced to leave the area just a few weeks ago?
Now someone is saying they were left behind?

As far as I understand it most of the smart people left, black, white and otherwise.

Its only an issue of race because they're making it one...

Now am I so ignorant to think that racism doesn't exist, no. But it seems to me that it was their own fault that they were there.

Johnbt, sorry if I thought that your post, in a thread dedicated to racism claims, had anything to do with racism. I doubt that many of the people alive in 1927 still reside in the Ninth Ward of New Orleans. If they were, they'd probably have expected the Coprs of Engineers to duplicate their decades old event. After all, the levee was blown there to protect New Orleans, which it apparently did.

Again, sorry if I misunderstood.:)

Is someone here actually arguing that when poorest, least educated and least sophisticated people in our society jump to the wrong conclusion, this is suprising?

Come on. We all watch television. The majority of people in trouble due to Katrina were black. You actually have to think a little to not jump to thinking there is a connection.

The people saying this aren't guilty of anything more than being dumb. They are not exactly unusual on this continent in that regard, are they?

2002 Statistics from Census Bureau

After reading this thread I figured I would do a little homework. Here is what I found from the U.S. Department of Commerce and US Census Bureau

-55.3% of the black population lives in the south / 33.3% of the white non- hispanic population lives in the South

-51.5 percent of the black population lives in a metropolitan area, inside central city / 21.1 percent of the white population lives in a metropolitan area, inside central city

-Of the black population 35.5% are under 18 while 6.7% are 65 and over
-Of the Non-hispanic whites 29.9% are under 18 while 12.4% are 65 and over

For the full info - here's the link http://www.census.gov/prod/2003pubs/p20-541.pdf

From all this info this IMHO is what it seems.
-The blacks of NO are at the bottom of the poverty barrell. Because of this they have become dependant upon government aid to help them see it through difficult times.
-It has been said that ignorance is overcome with education. The lower overall education levels lead to a closed mindset of the world outside NO.
-Because the black population in the South is proportionately larger their message is louder and more vocal.
-Typically the inner city mindset of black youth is to try and portray the immage of the rap moguls and music stars scene on TV. The black community overall is a multimillion dollar spending machine which overlooks some of the basic needs to keep this image.
-Fear and frustration force people to look for others to blame.
-The media is going to communicate anything that gives them more publicity and a story. When was the last time we heard about Tommy winning a spelling B??
-As i recall either earlier this week or at the end of last week a white non-hispanic woman who is from the 9th ward was pleading for the government to get it's act together. The blacks might be trying to say the same thing but they are looking at it in terms of black or white. Personally I agree with IndianDean. This is about the poor and wealthy, it just happens the the marjority of the poor are black.

"I doubt that many of the people alive in 1927 still reside in the Ninth Ward of New Orleans."

Maybe, maybe not. And do you suppose the people who were alive in '27 talked about it to their children and grandchildren?

My parents were born in '22 and '24 and they're both still alive and talking about stuff that happened way back when. I knew my grandparents pretty well, at least up until I was a teenager, and they were all born in the 1890s. My mother's father was the oldest of the four and he was born in 1891. He lived to be 94.

They grew up hearing stories about the Civil War. :)

Firearmfan..a couple of more stats I would like to know..proportion of blacks and whites who dropped out of school prematurely...average grades of white and black students....you decide what your life will be or not be...

Everytime I pass gas someone somewhere would probably call me racist given the opportunity... Really impressive assertion anymore as far as I'm concerned.

Well i guess i gotta state my perspective even if its kinda old fashioned.
First let me say i have no formal education and i am a construction foreman.
I built my home with my own two hands and bought materiel with my earned income same goes for my 50 or so acres.
Now if my home were destroyed by an act of nature
i guess i'd have to do so again.
Why should anyone else be responsible for my home my well being or that of my family including the taxpayers of this country.
Anyone of sound mind and body is responsible for their own actions including liveing in a city below sea level. And especially staying there when a very powerful hurricane is near.
Now keep in mind i stated anyone of sound mind and body i am all for helping anyone unable to help themselves. [ Not just unwilling]
And yes i realize that alot of these folks did not own cars' there are several things on my want list to but maybe i dont have them because i did'nt work hard enough or plan well enough.
Either way thats my fault not the government and not the taxpayers.
I sure hope at some point in the future our government gets out of the insurance business.
Its everyones choice where they wish to live but if its a bad choice its YOUR bad choice.
