Big Caliber Rifles for target shooting?

Beer and paintball is one thing beer and a simple daisy bb gun is also cool but I wont touch even a serious air rifle when im drinking much less a 22 or other rifles. To go to a shooting range while even the slightest bit intoxicated is completely stupid and irresponsible imo.

You're going to drink and shoot? Did you fall on your head or do you just like lawsuits?

Why do you need a heavy cal rifle for long range? My 7.65 and 8mm will reach out and touch anything I can set the irons on.

Drinking a 12 pack of beer, shooting a gun then likely driving.... I have to question why anybody would do that.

Alcohol and firearms do NOT mix.
Sorry if I am skipping out on the main point of this thread, but I can't get past the concept of grabbing a 12 pack of beer and a gun.
Thankfully, I live thousands of miles away from wherever it is the OP shoots.

Bullethole1:

As already mentioned drinking and loaded firearms don't mix. Mixing them not only is dangerous it gives the anti-guners ammunition for their anti gun campagins. I have a 308 Norma, a .264 winchester, a .375 H&H, a .338 Winchester and a 404 Jeffery that I shoot regularly. Yes, I shoot for small groups and at deer targets out to 300 yards. I also use a 30/06 Springfield and a .243 winchester for the same target shooting and hunting. Are you suggesting that my day at the range is wasted? There's an old adage; to each his own when the old lady kissed the cow. By the way, with the 404 Jeffery I keep the elephants out of the watermellon patch

I still cant figure out why some folks want a .300 or bigger rifle to go shoot at targets? Is it just a hobby or obsession to see how close you can get your MOA or whatever you call it? Sorry Im not a "Professional Gun Fanatic" but what do you do once you got the closest groups say 1/2" at 600 yards or however much distance? Im guessing its for fun and a hobby because I dont think you need to dial your scope in that much to kill a deer, hog, elk etc. I dont think I would want to spend over 20 bucks for a 20 pack of centerfire shells to go shoot because I sometimes I will get a 12 pack of beer and go shoot for hours, maybe run through 300 rounds of .22 lr.Thats just me though. Are there tournaments for getting your rifle set up to do wonders at such a long distance where you can win big money say $50k+ or is that just a dream because then I want in? :D

Sir, you opened your mind to us with your rambling above, but most importantly you showed us all how empty it is...!!! Go run now and get that 12 pack of Pabst Blue Ribbon, swill it down and write some more passages of wisdom. Bullethole I think has one in his head - lol...

I shoot large calibers at paper so I can stay good with that certain caliber so when hunting comes around Ill be good with my large caliber rifle... You need to practice with what ever round you are planning to do your hunting with so you can stay familiar with it

Personally I think that "because they can" is a sufficient answer, and probably even the best one.

I plink with everything from .22s to .45-70s. They're all fun in their own way.

A 12-pack and a firearm, though? Not a good idea, and quite likely illegal.

You all are just mad at bullethole because he didn't share a beer with you.

"Professional Gun Fanatic", is that a rite of passage?

At one time, long before any of us were born, long range target shooting was a popular sport in some circles. The rifles were big bore single shots, mostly in forgotten calibers, and were fired from a standing position with iron sights. It sounds awfully difficult, but it had no relationship with any practical shooting activity, either hunting or combat. It was a true gentleman's sport, rather like sporting clays. I think it was of German origin and we thought we were a nation of riflemen.

I would if I could ($$)...

I see no reason to bash things you can't afford, understand and/or accept..

Hell, if I was wealthy I'd even try POLO..another pointless activity that costs a lot and has no practical/tactical use..but I'm not someone who doesn't want to try things just because of the price of admission.

And thanks to you, OP...next year I plan on buying a Marlin .45/70 for just this purpose...big bullets, with big power, at long ranges. Sounds like a fun day at the 600 yard line..

Interesting how social brainwashing has changed us. Back in 1968 we had beer vending machines on military bases with cigrette vending machines too.
No global warming back then either and we use R12 to recharge AC's.
Oh Well...

Here is me punching paper with my AMAC 1500 50BMG...

I'm with most of the posts above.

You could apply the same logic many many choices in life. To each their own.

I still love shooting 1/2" groups at 100yds with my T/C Muzzleloader 250gr sabot loaded over 150gr of blackpowder...what a boom. The funny part is, I don't use it for hunting...but just a blast to shoot.

I change out the barrel to my 22-250 and still shoot 1/2" at 100yds...but I like shooting the blackpowder for the added challenge.

Other examples to which you can give one answer to every question:
Q: Why do you want to own an AK-47?
A: Because I want to, and have worked hard in my life for the privelege.

Q: Why do you need to shoot a big bore at the target range?
A: Because I want to, and have worked hard in my life for the privilege.

Q: Why do you eat red meat when broccolli and vitamin pills will suffice?
A: Because I want to, and have worked hard in my life for the privilege.

Q: Why do you want a Corvette when the fastest you can go in your state is 70mph on the highway and a Hyundai gets more MPG?
A: Because I want to, and have worked hard in my life for the privileg

Etc, etc, etc...

The only entitlement in America USED to be an opportunity for opportunity!

When you get past a 1000 it is nice to have a 30 cal magnum of some flavor. A 308 will do it, but those 175 SMK's are getting a tad squirrely at those distances. A 223 with 80 or 90 gr VLD's will do it too, but with a lot more wind dope to calculate.

A lot of folks like the 6.5's and heavy 7's for long range work, but all in all it is just personal preference.

The only "12 pack" I would grab to go shooting would be a 12 pack of empties for targets. I have fond memories of killing soda cans with dad's 22...

I believe in practicing a lot with the gun you are going to bring hunting. My most used hunting rifle is 45/70. It is important that I stay in good practice with the gun so that I don’t injure animals. This requires lots of target shooting with my “big bore”. With hand loading it is not as expensive as it could be.
