2 men kill each other in knife fight
Two men died Friday night after a knife fight at an apartment in a Minneapolis housing complex where one of them was baby-sitting a toddler, police said Saturday.
Only one of the men had been identified as of late Saturday; he was James Lee Gibb, 25, of Redby, Minn., who died of a stab wound to the chest. No one else was involved and no one is being sought as a suspect, police said.
The stabbings were at the Little Earth housing complex at 2427 18th Av. S. They occurred after the man who was baby-sitting let an acquaintance into the apartment, said Lt. Lee Edwards, head of the Minneapolis police homicide unit. It was not clear late Saturday whether Gibbs was the man in the apartment or the acquaintance.
The two men started fighting within minutes of the acquaintance's arrival, although investigators have no clear motive for the attack, Edwards said.
"I don't know if we will ever understand this, because the two principals are dead," he said.
The acquaintance apparently started stabbing the baby-sitter, who grabbed his own knife and begin stabbing his attacker in self-defense, Edwards said.
The wounded baby-sitter managed to get out of the apartment and walk to the home of relatives, who took him to Children's Hospital in Minneapolis.
Edwards said the man later was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis, where he died.
Police found the second man in the apartment about 10 p.m. The toddler, who was in the apartment but apparently slept through the stabbings, was not injured, Edwards said. The man found in the apartment was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center, where he died.
Edwards said investigators are trying to figure out what happened and whether the deaths were a double homicide, a murder-suicide or accidental.
"Either way, we have two people dead," Edwards said. "If these two had worked their problems out, talked it through and maybe gone to an elder instead of apparently killing each other, then we wouldn't have this."

Perhaps sensible knife laws and registration could have prevented this. And since there was a baby present, it really is "for the children".....
