best target bullet weight for a .223

I'm gonna approach this differently. My Rem 700 has a 1 in 12 barrel and my ARs has a 1 in 9 and 1 in 8. I have shot only up to 69 gr on the ARs and only up to 55 gr on the 700. The 55 gr shoots well on all three up to my range limit of 340 yards. I have only tried up to 60 gr on the Rem and it did not like it.

So my answer is 55 gr V-Max. It shoots well in all three of my .223/5.56 rifles.

For 100, 200 and 300 USD, light for caliber/twist rates seem best. For 600 +, a VLD boatail become better for high twist rates.

I'll mention this to save someone spending money on something they cannot use.

Hornady makes two different 75 gr bullets. One is a match BTHP.

This one can be loaded to 2.260 COAL and works in an AR feeding from magazines just fine

The other one is the 75 gr A-Max.Despite what some have said, you cannot load the 75 gr A-max in .223/5.56 to a 2.260 or less COAL to feed in AR magazines. At that length, the ogive is set back into the case mouth.
