Best state gun laws?

Vermont is a pretty friendly state for gun owners, I must say. Other than the usual restrictions around federal buildings, courthouses, schools, etc, one can carry openly or concealed without permits.

I like it here for other reasons as well ;)

Vehicle Carry Allowed? Yes/No Must be in glove box.
Anywhere in the vehicle as long as there is a lid/door that will close and conceal the firearm. Glove box, center console with a lid, Tupperware container on the seat with a lid on it, overhead console with a door on it.

Chicago has anti-gun mayors, but at least they never financed bogus gun-buying "stings" in other states.

Mayor Bloomberg is a blight on the entire state !

Go ahead and carry that copy of the 2A around in your wallet and present it instead of a CHL, you will see how fast you lose that right....

If you'll notice the entirety of my post, you'll see that I have my CWP, and have had it for 4 years. The fact that I don't agree with having to have it in the first place doesn't mean I'm a moron that carries sans permit (where required)...

jgcoastie, If your standard is one of constitutional carry, then Texas and Florida are in the bottom 46 somewhere.

IE that's the exception; not even 10% of the states, IIRC.

Please realize that I actually agree with your premise that open and concealed carry should be constitutionally protected.

I just don't agree that Florida, which IIRC was the first state to pass shall-issue, which helped domino a bunch of other states along, is anywhere close to Illinois, Maryland, etc when it comes to pain over guns.

Some states that, per your theoretical ranking, would have open carry (on the books) often don't seem to have it in practice. Look at threads on abuse of open carriers in CT, PA, and LA.

WV isn't too bad. open carry is legal. You can conceal carry in public with a permit. You can carry however you want on private land without any kind of permit. And the best part of my great state, no need to register firearms, no need for a permit just to own a gun. You can buy them used or new at stores, pawn shops even sell guns. Some states they aren't allowed to do that. Only thing you'll ever have to do to own a gun in this state that involves the government is if you buy it from a store you must pass a background check. If you buy it from an individual, that includes gun shows, you just gotta hand over the cash and you're good.

No open carry in Oklahoma but it is a shall issue state. Back ground check only if buying from a dealer. No registration other than that. Also if deadly force is needed and they find it was justified you have Immunity from civil lawsuit. Also we have a Second Amendment day. June 28th is Oklahoma's 2nd Amendment day.

Of states that have laws: from the state that allows ccw without any sort of permit to those that control them hard...Washington State has very friendly gun laws, shall issue CWP's that apply to every jurisdiction in the state and open carry (at least on paper). For a DEEP blue state its one of the best. :D

Thanks in large part to Grassroots public activism,
like the Connecticut Citizens Defense League, and recent case law. Connecticut police, both local and state have received new guidance on what used to be a darker shade of gray area when it comes to open carry. It is legal with a Ct. Pistol permit. There has also been a lot of improvements made to the application process. We are moving in the right direction.

I don't agree with heavily weighting the availability to open carry as a key metric in determining "best state gun laws". I think you should have the right to do so, but in my opinion, it's over rated.

I dont "open carry". I carry a stainless Para ordnance P10 with a ported and extended barrel. it's a little too menacing looking for New England But it's nice to not have to worry about accidentally exposing your gun and getting in trouble for it. Its also nice to not have to worry so much about what clothes you have to wear to conceal your gun. As I said, I don't open carry in the traditional sense. But since the affirmation about two years ago that open carry is perfectly legal here in ct, I have been able to ditch the iwb for an owb, and just print a little.

I've lived in TX for less than a year, have my CHL permit and enjoy carrying. I wish we had better carry laws (open carry, etc) BUT I came here from NJ which, no matter what anyone or any statistic claims, is not a May Issue state. I never met anyone who got a carry permit in twenty years of shooting there. Only friends of the Governor or NB, NHL, NFL and celebs got permits.

So, TX isn't tops but it is damn good to live in America for once!

edit:

I always thought VA was pretty gun friendly...concealed carry, open carry, etc

+1 on Virginia.

The only time an officer ever spoke to me about my openly carried pistol was to ask me how I liked my CZ and how he wished he could carry one as a duty weapon.

My thought on all this is IF you have been issued a permit from any state and are still in good standing it should be good in any I say ANY other state as long as you abide by their rules...I have one in PA and more than likely if I get caught with in in NEW YORK I will lose the gun and maybe even go to jail..Now to me this is BULL CRAP....

Who thinks FL had the first "shall issue"? Not even close. WA has had their present "shall issue" no training required, since 1961, and legal OC since statehood.

Any state that overregulates where you can carry (including the state house and local gov buildings), or allows local governmental entities to further restrict carry, if not free.

I will give FL a thumbs up for their fining local governments that do not toe the line though. Every state should do that.
