what would be the best slug gun i can get for 225? I would like to get an auto but none are in this price range. So that leaves me with pumps and single shots. I have looked at the Mossberg 500 and pardner pump slug guns. Any others i should be looking at? Would i be better off getting something used? Are the H&R ultra slug hunters accurate/reliable shotguns?
Im going to scope this so something with out irons is prefered but not manditory.

Can soneone explain the differences (other than the obvious) between 20ga and 12ga slugs?

thanks,
devin

1. Used 870
2. Mossberg 500

Both will serve your needs well. The H&R ultra slug guns are supposed to be pretty nice also, but I would stick with a pump shotgun.

The Pardner pump action is a Chinese copy of the Remington 870.......

EDIT:
It's too bad you didn't ask this question a few weeks back. J&G Sales was blowing out Rem 870 slug guns for about the price you are looking for.

h&r's will last longer than your gonna want to shoot it. its gonna hurt like all hell. get a used 870, but the slug barrel will cost nearly as much as the shottie. you can shoot with a smooth bore, but not far.
the 20 ga. is the way to go for slugs. its plenty big enough, has the range and kicks less than a heavier 12ga slug.

yeah, ive heard the h&r's kick like a mofo. after a bit of thinking i dont know how much deer hunting im going to do so im planning on finding a used or inexpensive auto combo that i can use for birds too. i know i can use a bird barrel but id rather not be limited to 50yd shots. It will cost a bit more than 225 but i think its a better way to go. I already have an 870 but i cant justify spending 170 on a barrel.

Yes, the H&R's certainly do kick.

I have my grandfather's H&R Topper model. It weighs something like 6 pounds.

It's extremely unpleasant with regular trap loads, even.

However, since it's older, it has a hard plastic buttplate. I think it's plastic, anyways.

I wonder how it would feel with a rubber buttplate. Hmm...

did a little used gun searching and found out my fiance's brother has a 12ga remington 1100 skeet model with 'deer' barrel and bird barrel. The 'deer' barrel is a shorter 20 something inch with iron sights. he said hes not sure if its rifled or not ill just have to go check it out. the gun has a few dings here and there but hes only wanting 325 out of it. found my huntin gun.

thanks,

the h&R ultra i believe it is called hardley kicks at all probably due to the heavy barrel. the gun is pretty heafty it weighs more then my mossberg 500 slug gun, kicks less and is more accurate

Marlin 512

Just picked up a Marlin 512 for 225. Very nice bolt action with iron sights and scope mount. Kinda hard to find any more but priced right.

Go with the H&R Ultraslug - you won't be sorry!

My son bought a new H&R Ultraslug because he hunts deer in a slug only area. I went with him to the range to finish sighting it in as the store he bought the gun and a 3x9 Nikon Slughunter scope at, boresighted it for him. He also had a LimbSaver recoil pad put on the gun. Well, his first shot using 3" Winchester Partitioned Gold sabot slugs hit abot 2" SE of the bull at 50 yds. We made the necessary adjustments to his scope and he fired 3 more of the Partitioned Gold sabots at the 50 yd range. I couldn't believe what I saw through the spotting scope so we walked up to the target. He had all but completely obliterated the bull. His group was just one out-of-round large hole.

We moved to the sandbagged bench at the 100 yd range where he used the aimpoint for 100 yds. This time it was a tight cloverleaf but again, the bull was completely gone. Since our range only goes to 100 yds, we couldn't test the gun and scope combination at a greater distance that day. He hunted from a tree stand at the edge of a friends field and took an 8-point buck at a ranged 146 yds. The 161 lb buck dropped where he stood less than 1/2 hr. after the season opened. He said that he simply used the 150 yd aim point in the Slughunter scope and apparently, it was right on the mark.

I've asked Santa for a setup exactly like his and if I read my bank account statement right, he will be leaving it under my tree Christmas morning. I can't say for sure whether all H&R Ultra Slugs shoot that good but his sure does! I'll let you know after Christmas if mine does too (depending on Santa's generosity and the good Lord).

I was thinking about getting a pump slug gun but let's face it . . . after the first shot, the deer is either down or gone!:)

My Benelli Nova tactical 12 pump puts Remington rifled slugs in 3-6" groups at 100 yards with ghost ring sights, and me standing. Now that might sound a little loose, but I'm partially paralyzed so a "less limited" person could easily get tighter groups (especially scoped), and at that distance it would still drop your deer.

I bought the gun new for $400 5 years ago, saw them new in the store for $300 a year later, and I'd imagine they're right in your ballpark used.
