Best Shooter?

To say that I am not a great handgun shooter would be an understatement. However I enjoy shooting them. I always take a sidearm when I go exploring around here. Shooting at impromptu targets is something I take great joy at.

I do have one handgun that I am getting better with. It is an old High Standard Double Action Revolver in .22 long rifle. It is a nine shooter with a six inch barrel.

I can hit cans and other small object often at reasonable ranges. The other day a small sparrow landed on a scrub plant about ten yards away. I hit it on the first off hand shot. I would have been pleased to have done this with a .22 rifle let alone a handgun. I realize that a .22 handgun is not a very good choice for self defense. But I think I might actually hit a target with this gun. With most handguns the safest place for anyone to be if I was trying to shoot them would be straight in front of me.

Here is my topic question.

Which of your handguns do you shoot best? Is there a major difference between how well you do with this particular pistol compared to the others you own?

best?

Hmmm......My personal best scores in National Match Courses were fired with a 1911. My best slowfire score was fired with a .22 (a High Standard Victor). My first cleaned targets were with the 1911.
In general, I shoot the 1911s better than other pistols - at least at distances under 50 yards.
Are the differences major? Depending on the other gun, yes.

Best shooter? Hard to say. Probably my 617, because I shoot it the most. But when I'm on and seeing well, despite these old eyes, my 14-4 feels like my most accurate revolver.

My worst shooting gun? My Glock 22. Nothing wrong with the gun, my buddies have shot it and are pretty accurate with it. Me? Not so much and I'm not sure why. The gun is reliable and I enjoy shooting it, just not a great shot with it.

My Springfield TRP 1911 on the other hand is a gun that I'm very accurate with. I'm pretty good with my S&W 686 too, but when I was getting a lot of range time in, I was amazed at how well that 1911 grouped for me.

sight radius, ease of trigger pull, and ergonomics of grip determine the best shooter for you. sight radius and trigger pull are almost universal. the easier the trigger pull, the less chance you will offset the sights as you pull the trigger, and the longer sight radius allows for better aiming.

as for grip, depends on your hand.

almost every first shot from a gun will be accurate within reason. follow up shots depend on a whole range of variables, the primary factor recoil and having to bring the gun back on target, and the trigger reset, to name a few

and in regards to recoil, you have length of barrel, compensated or not, weight of gun, wether it is metal framed or polymer framed, etc

I'm quite accurate with my EAA Stock 10mm.
I'm fairly accurate with my Smith 659 9mm
I'm pretty good with a good 1911.
I'm extremely accurate with my Steyr GB at long distances.

I'm good enough to 30 feet with my Glock 17. But, that's my main work-horse firearm. "Good enough" is all I need for defensive purposes. In fact, I am not very accurate with out at longer distances. But, it totally reliable and maintenance free.

Most accurate is my High Standard Model HB shooting Wolf match or CCI standard velocity.

Then it really depends on the range that the target is at. For 20 yards and in it is my CZ82. Outside of that my XDM I do much better with. I don't really understand it but that is how it works out.

Hmmmm....
Cheap to shoot, accurate, and a nice trigger - old Hi Standard Victor.
Most accurate - T/C Contender.
But it's my 4" Pachmyer-gripped M-19, loaded with wadcutters or +P loads, that I shoot the most and is on my hip when going for a walk in the woods.

The best shooting guns that I have owned were a Colt Python and a S&W m14 both with 6in barrels.Currently that title goes to my Browning Buckmark 22lr.

I've owned quite a few handguns and still do. I feel there is quite a difference regarding a semi auto and a revolver in most cases for the average occasional shooter when it comes to the ability to shoot. Revolvers have fixed barrels rather than a barrel and bushing which allows some play. Many revolvers are 6 inch's and some more which gives one a longer sight radius. Also many revolvers have better sights than semi's because many revolvers are designed as longer range hunting guns verses semi auto's because many are designed for close quarters combat.

Ammunition is also a factor in a guns accuracy as well as the inherent accuracy of the gun itself. I have found I shoot the best with a 1911 style gun with a flat mainspring housing. I shot for years in competition with the 1911 and have become accustomed to its features. I have also found a well assembled 1911 will hold with most revolvers to 50 yards and beyond. Handguns can be capable of excellent accuracy, I used to shoot gallon jugs offhand at 100 yards with a S&W model 25 45acp using open sights and rarely missed. Accurate shooting takes practice, practice, and more practice. You might be surprised how well you'll do with constant practice.

There's an old adage A hit with a .22 beats a miss with a .44

Your H&R sounds like a Model 929 or "Sentinel" model. If you wanted to "step up" you could spend a small fortune on a S&W Model 617 (stainless, 10-shots) like the one below. Or the Model 18, a blued 4" six-shooter classic training gun.

The advantage here is that you can have the actions "tuned" by S&W or a good gunsmith. That will improve your accuracy.

As to which handgun(s) I shoot best. My Beretta 92FS is a winner because it's sights are easier for my aging eyes to pick up and align. But for sheer dead-nuts accuracy, my Model of 1955 Target .45 revolver (Model 25) takes the prize.

My most accurate pistol is my M&P 40 full size.

The most accurate pistol I have fired is probably my mom's Ruger Mark II, in .22lr.

Back to the topic ....

The guns I shoot the best are a couple of different ones / for different reasons ...

1. My 1911's ( because the triggers break like glass ) ... Wilson Combat 5" guns ...are my favorite...( in 9mm to .45 acp )...

2. My S&W revolvers in 6" - like a model 27 in .357 mag ... again they have spectacular triggers in single action / but acceptable triggers in double action as well.....

3. A Sig X-Five in .40 S&W ....because it has a 2 1/2 lb trigger pull on it / it fits my hands great / and at 55 oz with a full mag in it ( 14 rds of .40S&W ) - it is very easy to shoot ....

The guns I shoot the worst .... my Sigs / especially in double action with 10 lb triggers / and even in SA with 4.4 lb triggers in them ...but I like them anyway ...

Since we're back on topic, my Browning Buckmark Target with a red dot, followed closely by my S&W 4" 65.
