Best Semi-Automatic .22 LR?

I have two shooting buddies with 10/22s. They're fine rifles. But I wouldn't trade my Remington 552 for one.

Most fun

M&P 15-22 gets my vote! Easily one of the best as an understudy for an AR15. Set up a tactical course and you will be screaming with joy. Pretty good accuracy too with iron sights, red dot or scope. If you want accesories, pretty much everything you can hang on an AR. Also most ammo works with mine as long as I keep it clean.

My wife has a 597. She can shoot it lights out but she hates the trigger. It's an okay rifle. Not the best but works. :)

The really old, banged-up Marlin 60 that I bought last winter had stovebolts every other round.
This is no exaggeration. Paid $75.

Took it to the gun smith (this cost $45: but he solved minor problems with three other guns for free...), who cleaned it and added a spring and something else. It now jams about every fourth or fifth round.

It's much harder to feed a single rd. with these type rifles compared to any bolt-action.

Wish I had saved the money and bought a new 60.

It's already been said but it bears repeating: Don't overlook the Marlin Model 60. Meanwhile, I had a Remington 597; it proved to be unreliable; jammed up on me more than once. On one notable occasion it malfed on a follow-up shot and cost me a squirrel. Of course, if I'd done my part and hit the squirrel the FIRST time, that wouldn't have happened....:o Gitcha a 60, bud!

My wife bought a mod60 for about $80...

I had to take it down and soak it in Diesel for a week - work some of the grit out - soak for a few more days - work some more grit out....

Eventually, it came up clean and shoots suprisingly well. Feed issues are minimal, but it has the tube magazine....

Love my S&W AR15-22, though.

While I have no trigger time on a Ruger 10/22, my vote goes with the M&P 15-22. Good trigger, good ergonomics (especially if you already have a background on the AR) rails let you add whatever bell and whistle you see fit. In terms of accuracy, it might not set any records but it's still more accurate than most shooters. Oh, and to top it all off, it's a lot of fun to shoot as well.

I dont get the "the 10-22 is great, just replace these parts and its good to go" thing. My friend has a semiauo marlin, 99 bucks at cableas on sale and it shoots just as well. Half the price. No parts change.

A little bit of correction

Well throughout this thread i've seen a lot of responses and for the most part people have given pretty valid reasons why their .22 of choice is "best" in a sense. There a few things I need to reconsider though before I maybe make
a purchase in the relatively near future.

What did I grow up with and learn to shoot on? Ruger's 10/22 and Mark II/III .22 pistol.

What magazine has been kind of touted as the most reliable? The BX-1, and now that they just came out with a RUGER FACTORY MADE 25 rounder built to feed rounds as good as the BX-1, 10/22 is hard to beat. tube feeders are nice and all, but they don't provide for fast reloading.

What seems to be able to customize the easiest? Again, 10/22, with multiple hunting, tactical, and straight up crazy fun combinations to choose from. (Can you say 50 mm red dot with 100 round drum, 1 lb trigger, and painted digital camo? I CAN!)

So, with that in mind, it is already clear to me that the 10/22 will be my best bet, as my family already has a few I can choose from, ranging from carbine to rifle to bull barreled configurations. Now, for a secondary gun I believe I may pick up a marlin 60 sometime, many are saying they're a cheap alternative. I dunno. Time will tell.

Lol, yeah. The rifle is fine on it's own but there's elite types that want the best they can be sold so with the market for customization available for the 10/22 they buy the stuff. I put a target barrel on mine.
