Best semi auto 7.62x51 .308?

I've been wanting to get a new semi auto rifle in .308 but not in an AR platform and the price tag on an M1 is a tad high for me at the time. When I heard the mini 14 came in 7.62 I was excited untill I saw it was x39.

I would like to stay around 800. Any thoughts? Maybe used M1?

Thanks.

I think you mean an M1A :)

This is an M1 rifle; some were in .308 but it's predominant chambering is 30-06:

Not at all to be confused with M1A1 in .30 carbine

for 308 semi autos you got ar's m1a's or like me i just bought a russian saiga 308 for $500. It is crudely made, rather cheap i suppose. It is not an m1a or an ar but for the money hell with it. i think vepr also makes a 308 might want to check them too.

I've seen people squeeze some amazing accuracy out of those Saiga .308s.

The M1A/M14 is my favorite though.

Now now... let's not confuse "crude" with "simple."

I'd say M1A

Just recently I was shooting a friend's CETME, and, I gotta admit, it was a great shooting and great feeling gun. Less felt recoil than the M1A, though the rear sight aperture is larger and makes it less precise at longer ranges.

Chris- yeah meant M1A however I doubt that would have stopped the M1A suggestions.

I do like that FN even tho it's pricey. Im not a huge fan of Springfield Marketing Ploy Armory. Seeing that the real SA closed in the 60s and a guy in San Antonio decided to buy the rights to the name. That and the rebadged Croatian XD and Brazilian 1911s (my friends SA 1911 has performed well)

Thanks for the replies so far.

Edit: def not knocking their custom shop esp when les Baer was the director.

Most any commercial M14 or even the M1A from Springfield Armory, Inc. will do.

$800.00 and some diligent shopping will land you a nice Norinco or Poly Tech M14 and that ain't bad.

I dream about M1As. I mean honestly , in my dreams I finally get money to buy M1As.

The problem is I need me at least two , a Loaded and a Scout Squad , and maybe also a SOCOM. oh yeah I need the M21-M25 sniper version too. Thanks.

I heard some good things about the Kel-tec SU-16 series. In your price range and you can check the out a Kel-tec's website. Also google for multiple reviews.

The accept M16 mags if you dig hi-caps.
