Best self-defense ammo?

the one time high doller ammo use jag player shoot 14 times he is still alive

I've got it! He's referring to the Jacksonville Jaguars player, Richard Collier, who was shot 14 times and survived - albeit paralyzed and minus his left leg (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,430444,00.html). Still not completely sure on the "one time high doller ammo use" part. Maybe he has inside information suggesting the player was shot with expensive rounds?

You guys referring to the thugs...
Need to insert crackhead as a moniker instead. Crackheads aren't thinking. Thugs(gang members) tend to encourage military(marine and army) vacations within their ranks to groom members. No joke. Its education for some of these guys. The result is a street savvy battle hardened soldier. I would show some pictures of gang tags on Baghdad walls, but I'll let you search for yourself. They happen to very organized.

As far a ammo Ranger T gotta love it.

Patriots - we use HRT bought for us by dept regulation in 9, .40 or .45. Glock is standard issue for the last 6-7 years unless you grandfathered in before. The H+K's MP5's are SWAT issue and use the same HRT that is issued to Dets and patrol....all bought on huge contracts to save money and standadize issue ammo dept wide...

My Browning High Power is loaded with Speer standard pressure 124gr Gold Dots. It's a forty year old t-series, so I don't shoot +p in it. As for the benefits "expensive" SD ammo provides over Walmart Whitebox, how much are YOU worth? I am worth a lot more than a dollar a round.

Cordially, Jack

I'm looking for opinions on the "best" 9mm or .40 S&W ammo to carry for self defense. Brand, grain, and slug type would be appreciated.

Your question is kind of like asking, "Which tire is best?" The only real answer you can get is, "It depends." There isn't a single answer.

For my 9mm, I like Federal HST and Remington Golden Sabers. But I think any good quality hollow point would serve well. Winchester Ranger, Speer Gold Dot, Hornady TAP, and Buffalo Bore all come to mind. Personally, I prefer the 147gr slugs, but your mileage may vary. Buy a box of each and try 'em out in your weapon. Select the one that works best for your situation and firearm.

It's the only way to know. All of the responses to such a question on all of the online forums are nothing more than suggestions or testimony of someone else's experience, which may or may not be applicable to you.

There are a multitude of opinions, beliefs and answers on this subject. None perhaps are more controversial than the Strasbourg tests. Everyone has a favorite test and a favorite ammo along with a preferred set of recommendations. Recently, I found this web site and use it as a "guide".

ammo

Any premium hp from any major manufacturer will serve you well. My personal favorite is the Winchester Silvertip. I know it's a 30 yr. old design, but it is relatively cheap and comes in 50 round boxes.

Any round that you can place exactly where you need it. I think far too many folks worry about bullet selection. Worry about practicing more with your carry piece. Human beings had no trouble killing millions of other human beings in wars long before the introduction of modern hollow point bullets.

"Ask what the local LEO's carry or are issued, but I would stay away from anything that says "Law Enforcement Only" on the box. That's just to cover yourself if you have to in court."

i would rather have to cover myself in court than be covered with a white sheet.

take issue with your logic, i suspect most LEO's carry ammo that states "Law Enforcement Only" so asking them does what?

i believe the law considers deadly force to be deadly force regardless of the round in the chamber.

that said, i dont think one particulure round is the best accross all calibers and platforms. you need to consider application as well.

do some research before you spend, tons of good info on the net, search, search and search again, then buy. thats what i did and feel i make the right choices. the good stuff is getting harder to come by fast and is likely unavailable locally.

:)

The one thing I can tell you for certain is that if someone tells you what the "best" (caliber, gun, brand of ammo, bullet weight, or magic bullet physics formula) is, you can safely tune out everything else they say from that point forward because they haven't got a clue what they are talking about.

but I would stay away from anything that says "Law Enforcement Only" on the box.

Winchester Ranger Ts don't say that on the box... they just say "Law Enforcement Ammunition" which simply indicates it was designed for LE. There is nothing on the box indicating non-LEO can't buy them because Winchester has no power to restrict it (except requesting their retailers do).

I simply emailed my local LE and asked what they use and what they would recommend I use. They said they use Ranger Ts and recommend I get ammunition with the best expansion and best penetration I can find. I went with Rangers because my LE uses them, they have good penetration and expansion, and cost less than most other defensive rounds. A crazy prosecutor would have a hard time making an argument against me following my LE advise and using a round that is perfectly legal. They can't try to claim its an evil super-man-killer round either because the local LE uses it and recommends it.

Several years ago, I did the research, and decided on Hydroshoks, 124g. for 9mm and 165g. for 40s&w. I still use the same rounds now because I'm a creature of habit. But I've come to believe that just about any name brand JHP will get the job done if your shot is on target.

I recently bought a P3AT loaded with fmj since we are rapidly moving into winter here in Colorado. I'm not convinced that a 380 jhp will penetrate a down coat and several layers of clothes.

the one time high doller ammo use jag player shoot 14 times he is still alive

Could this be Extreme Shock ammo. I understand these rounds explode in a shower of sparks on contact (or even grazing) with a target.;)

Well as far as opinions go...

For 9mm:

1) Corbon 115 grain +P DPX
2) Speer 124 grain +P
3) Winchester Ranger T 127 grain +P+

For 40 S&W:

1) Speer 155 grain
2) Remington 165 grain Golden Sabre

As far as the 40 S&W goes, its hard to pick a bad load. If you stick with a good tactical bullet like a Gold Dot, Golden Saber, SXT, DPX, or HST you will be fine. I dont like the 135 grain light recoil loads Federal makes and I tend to shy away from the heavier 180 loads because I think that there are better loads out there but all should do fine.

9mm is trickier IMO; there actually are some bad self defense loads for 9mm out there. Once again stick with a good tactical bullet like those mentioned above in the 124 grain +P range and you will be fine. I hear that the Federal 147 grain HST is a good load as well if you prefer something heavier and your pistol will cycle it reliably.

Current SD stock:

.22Mag-CCI Maxi-Mag TNT 30g
.380-Remington Golden Sabre 102g
9mm-Federal HST 147g
10mm-DoubleTap Speer Gold Dot 165g

Also, just sold some Federal HST 230g w/my Kimber Ultra CDP II.
