Best revolver ever....I hope this is not too boring or too general

Well it looks like we all agree 38s/357 is the best cartridge... Then its between old and colts and new sw pc guns...

The best revolver ever...

I am no friend of absolutes, particularly statements about the absolute best gun. Your definition simply might be different than mine.

There are a few revolvers of outstanding quality; the Korths from 24 series on, the Manurhin MR73, the Freedom Arms Casull revolvers (83?), S&W registered Magnums, the triple locks and hand ejectors, as well as the early Pythons ( until the late 1970s). The German Reichsrevolvers were well made, too. What about early Colt SAA's?

There a many excellent revolvers that are great shooters, though the build quality is not up to the above mentioned but it has little bearing on practical purposes.

I can shoot my S&W K-22 and M14-2 every bit as well as my 1972 vintage Python or any of my Korths. Nevertheless, we are all human and I have this 24 series rimfire Korth that I love to shoot in D/A more than any other revolver. It is my "best" and dearest gun, next to a cheap LE trade in S&W 65.

And still it may not be the best for you. Heck, it is just an overpriced German .22 ...

I have a modest collection that spans the twentieth century from 1901 to 1982. Most of mine were made after WWII, so the bulk of my personal experience is for guns made after that time.

I think that in may ways those revolvers that were made from the late twenties/early thirties to the end of the eighties represent the pinnacle of revolver technology. Many guns produced during that time had some hand fitting done to the lock work and are smooth right out of the box. Plus, the lines of them tend to be rather elegant as opposed to some of the downright weird looking stuff that is being produced today.

Unfortunately, not a very good picture of my few revolvers.

I can't even really pick out a favorite as I enjoy them all.

Highpower

You really need to get out to the next gunshow and supplement your meager repertoire.

I'll put it this way the golden age of revolver technology is now with the Scandium and ti parts combined with manufacturing technology. But for fit and finish on the average over the counter gun is long past.

I own the scandium titanium cylinder 8rd 357 snub nose performance center ... I'd rather shoot the older guns. Give me a plain jane revolver made in the 50s. Makes me all warm and fuzzy when I shoot the detective special

Generally speaking I like my old(er) guns more than I like the new(er) ones, because they where made much better. Better I mean more heavy-duty.
The problem is, that some parts are impossible to get.
The spring for my latch is rusted out/broken for my Colt MK3 Trooper, and can't find one.

No one will ever be able to convince me that the S&W Model 19 isn't the best revolver ever made -- the perfect combination of power, ergonomics, weight, etc.

Many years ago, before I got my first handgun, I poured over the Shooters Bible, Gun Digest, Guns and Ammo, Shooting Times, and I don't know what all other reading materials, and I came to the same conclusion Mike. It was mostly Bill Jordan and Skeeter Skelton's fault though.

The Smith & Wesson Model 19, with a 4" barrel, was the "perfect" handgun for me. Because of that research, a Model 19 (probably a -4, but I knew nothing of such things then) was my first handgun.

I traded that one off, and have owned a few others over the years, but today I have two, that Lord willing, I'll hold onto.

As we say so often..."If I could only have one...."

Speaking about my dream list, LifeSizePotato on youtube has almost all the revolvers I mentioned.
I love the design of those Ma.Te.Ba. and the finish of the Manurhin and the Korth.

And I've been looking for an Olmi to import for a year or two and haven't found one. :o

No way to answer "What was the best revolver" because there are so many criteria and so many answers.

Best quality? Python or a pre-war S&W Registered Magnum?

Best shooting? Colt Match or Target Model, a Dan Wesson, S&W K22?

Best hunting revolver? S&W M29, Redhawk, Casull?

Best investment? See first answer.

Best carry revolver? S&W Chiefs Special, Colt Detective Special?

Best police revolver? S&W 38/44, Model 10. Model 15, Colt Official Police? Too many to choose.

Finally, who is deciding? What is important to him? Way too many opinions and too many variables. There is no single "best" anything.
