best pump

There are a lot of good pump guns out there browning, winchester, mossberg, etc. I like the remington 870 wingmaster the best. Its what I started with and what feels the best to me.

Generally speaking, the "best pump" is the one that fits you well, is the easiest for you to operate and is reliable.

There are many good ones out there: Mossberg, Benelli, Remington, Browning and so forth. Personally, I prefer the Mossberg 590/590A1 overall due to certain features like the receiver mounted safety vs. the usual trigger mount. I love these guns; simple, effective, inexpensive and user friendly. But, this is just a preference...nothing more.

I love the Benelli SuperNova as well. These provide exceptional quality, maybe the best, for the price (although the autoloaders they sell are too expensive). However, parts are either hard to get or expensive. The Remington (870 Express) is a good gun as well, but not one I tend to consider. I hear the Wingmasters and/or 870 Police models are nice...if you are considering a Remington. The Brownings...well, nice guns but I dont care for their mode of operation (in regards to the pumps).

The best pump I have experience with, and also my favorite, is the Ithaca 37.

It's lighter and smoother than the 870. The roll engraving is super cool. The slide release is similar to that of the 870, except designed for a right handed user. A right handed user, and even one with short fingers, can press the slide release with his trigger finger without removing a hand from the gun. Bottom ejection is also super cool. It's also based on a John Moses Browning design.

The Winchester Model 12 is also very highly regarded. I haven't fired one, but I'd love to.

Quality wise:

Remington
Benelli
Browning BPS
Mossberg/Winchester
All them Chinese and turk ones

what do you think is the best pump? also what is your favorite pump? or what pumps dont you like and why?

Well, there was this gal in Thailand...
of course, the worst I ever had was only excellent ;)

I ain't experienced enuff shooting a variety of makes and models but my favorite is Mossberg as they are affordable and work just fine for my needs. My first gun was dad's old .410 Mossberg bolt gun. They are still American owned and some of the original family is employed there.

Browning BPS
Benelli Nova & Super
Remington 887 -- only because I don't have enough info on the gun
Ithaca 37
*Winchester 1200
*Remington 870 -- Win & Rem tied in my books Winchester had some better models (e.g. Marine Stainless) - Remington had the better fit & finish
CZ/Dan Wesson, Weatherby, Charles Daly the other Euro made/labeled models
the Chinese made crap
and the rattle trap POS Mossberg -- cheap to buy because cheaply made but they're starting to see the light and making better products that I'll never buy!

My personal favorite is the Browning BPS - good smooth action, strong and well made internal parts, cast neutral so good for left or right handed shooters, ejects out of the bottom.

I've fired most of the other pump guns - the 870 extensively, mossberg and the Benelli Nova.

There isn't much wrong with any of the bigger named pump guns - but I still prefer the Browning ( and I still have one in 12 and 20ga - that I bought
25+ years ago now / and they're still great guns ).

I have to say the Ithaca model 37 followed by the Browning BPS, i like the combination of bottom shell ejection with a steel reciever.

What is your primary use for the weapon? Hunting (if so, what type?), defense, or sport? Without that information I would recommend the Remington 870 or one of the Mossbergs. This is based on their popularity and the ability to get reasonably priced accessories that will tailor them to your specific purpose.

HAHA as soon as I read this thread I knew at least key players would come up. Remmington and Mossberg.

As far as personal experience goes, I have fired a BARE minimum 1500 rounds of all sizes thru my Remington 870 wingmaster without ever having a single problem whatsoever.

I've been shooting a Browning BPS for years, after being raised on an old Ithaca Featherlight 20, then multiple Mossbergs and Winchesters. The rest have stayed in the cabinet most of the time after I felt the trigger and smooth action on the BPS. Never had any reason to buy an 870.

and the rattle trap POS Mossberg --
Yeah, a friend said this about the one he bought.... then I showed him how to remove the magazine plug.

One of my Mossbergs is closing in on 30 years old. Never the slightest problesm except that some bluing has rubbed off in certain places.

I like em all, except maybe the Chinese stuff. They all work. The rest is just a matter of preference. My preference is for Mossberg, due to the location of the safety and other controls and the lighter weight. I use a Remington at work sometimes. It works too. Winchester, Benelli, Browning/Winchester, Ithaca, old Smiths, whatever. They are all quite well. Operators often fail but the gun rarely doesn.

Just buy whatever feels best in your hands. I think the best advice is

1. Buy a shotgun
2. CLEAN it (yes, BEFORE shooting it).
3. Buy mucho ammo (get the #8 shot dove loads for practice).
4. Shoot it a bunch.
5. Steadfastly resist the idea of putting stupid crrrap on it (heatshields, bayonets, ridiculous stocks or pistol grip only stocks, rails, and other miscellaneous mallninjery).
6. Repeat (often).

Note: Buying is OPTIONAL on subsequent iterations.

Browning BPS fits my needs best . . . clean design, great safety feel and location, good trigger and spent shells go down rather than getting in the way of things.

uhhh norinco Hawk 982... 870 copy from china... awesome gun... my neighbors 870 feels fake to me... and my friend at the sporting goods store has a police model thats a little outdated and it was just too light and bad sights... I like my ghost rings for everything...

Winchester Model 97, 12, and 42, Remington 870 Wingmaster, Ithaca 37 Browning BPS... No experience with the Benelli although everyone I know with one loves them... Never really been impressed with mossbergs... They go bang when you pull the trigger but they do not handle like an 870 or model 12 etc.....
