Best "Only One Gun" for all time: the Glock 19... Yes or No?

I have never owned a G19, but it seems to me that the one gun most everyone can agree on, if you only had one gun for all time, is the Glock 19. I base this on stuff I have read, conversations I have overheard, and general word on the street.

I am curious to know how many TFL'ers support this notion.

YES. If I had only one gun, for carry and defense, it would be a Glock 19. It is the perfect carry gun: rust proof, reliable, lightweight, simple, and will last you your whole life no matter how much you shoot it.

It is perfect for practice with cheap and available ammo.

Invest in a full-capacity mag and you've got 15+1 rounds of felon repellent.

IMO, the Glock 19 is the epitomy of the perfect "modern classic" carry gun.
If I could only own one gun, it would be it. And many multitudes would agree.

The Glock 30 is a close second.

Because I have the Right to own more than one gun, I like my Glock 32 in .357 Sig (same size as the Glock 19, but in a different caliber).
But, if push came to shove and I had to keep ONE gun, the Glock 19 stays.

When they speak of instituting "common sense gun control laws" keep this quote in mind:

"A `common-sense' approach to gun violence in America would be to ban handguns,"

Not a bad choice. The G19 is one of Glock's best and, being a mid-size, it is pretty versatile.

Like all compromises, it will suffer when compared to more specialized pieces in their most useful niche. For example, as a pocket gun, an Airweight J-frame or a Colt Mustang/Pony Pocketlite will work better. For an IDPA gun, the bigger G17 or G34 would be a little easier to shoot...and so forth and so on. Still, the G19 is a better choice than many for a "one and only".

SIG Sauer P228 or P226. The best pistol is that one which fits your hand best and you're most accurate with not necessarily what someone else likes. For me the answer is the SIG Sauer P Series. Mileage will of course vary.

So many pistols, so little money.

yes. i agree the G19 is a great gun but i also like other guns. i suppose if i could only have 1 pistol i'd take the G19 but i would be quite reluctant to give up my berettas.

i would take the G19 over other guns i like even as much (such as my beretta 92FS) because it can be used for more purposes. its small enough to use as a CCW but big enough to shoot well. also i can shoot my G19 better than i can shoot my berettas. they hold alot of rounds and will last a lot longer than i will. if i could only own 1 pistol i wouldn't want that pistol to wear out and break. ;-)

its just all around the best gun i can think of. its reliable, accurate, durable, feels good in my hands, points good for me, and i shoot it well. what more could you ask for?

I've actually decided to sell my G19 (!!!)

This was my favorite gun for a little while, but more for carry than to shoot. If I had to name the perfect carry gun, it would be a Glock. If I had to name a really good fightin' gun it would also be a Glock.

However, I don't carry much, and I don't get into gunfights all that often either :) . I simply like to shoot, and for wahtever reason I could never get that Glock to do what I wanted it to do. And, over the past few months I have unconciously forsaken my Glock for a Kimber--fact is, when at the range with a choice of which pistol to shoot, I gravitate toward the 1911 design.

So for me, if I only had one gun it wouldn't be a Glock (19 or other) even though it's a great weapon and has its devotees. Simple truth is, when you start talking about really good guns (like really good anythings), finer distinctions boil down to personal preferance.

Not to dog on Sigs, but my Sig 226 has the same capacity as my G19 and the Sig is HUGE! The Glock 19 is far more compact.
And, for a one and only gun, I would want one that handles wear and tear better than a Sig. My Sig shows a lot of wear for the little use it has had, and there is no way it would last as long or handle as many rounds (hundreds of thousands) that a Glock could. For a "one and only" gun, I want as gun that will last.
NOT trying to dog on Sigs are start a Glock vs Sig war, I just don't think the Sig 226 can compare in compactness to a Glock 19. It is apples and oranges, comparing a full sized gun with a compact, and they both have the same capacity.

Only one gun? Would have to be a .30-06 or a 12 gauge, either preferably with a tough finish.

If one could only have one sidearm- woe unto you- the Glock 19 would be a pretty good choice.

The G19 was my favorite when I could get all the Nyclad +P that I wanted and they were reasonable in price. It was a tackdriver with that ammo and the ammo was faster and expanded better than most.

NOW however, with Nyclads slower, more expensive and supposedly for LEO only... I have now and for the last several years opted for the venerable Makarov 9x18.

The Makarov is as accurate as the Glock or better and it's 100% reliable with any of the cheap military surplus and the new Russian 109 grain FMJ is fast. And, when I have to wear a pistol the Makarov is easier to carry because of it's slimmer profile.

Nevertheless, if I was in a special military unit where I used my pistol a lot and could get all the Nyclad I wanted free (even though it's slower now), I'd probably carry the G19 again.

G19, not only wouldn't be #1 it couldn't even crack my top ten.
colt .45acp
p.s. That street wouldn't be called glocktalk would it?

IMHO, for an all-around, all-time gun the Glock 19 would be a good choice, although not the only choice. Other good choices would include the BHP, SIG P228, Beretta 92FS, Glock 23, S&W Model 66--really, any world-class handgun, of which these are a few examples. My $0.02. :)

Um, if we're talking one handgun for all purposes, the G19 falls far short.
Target shooting & hunting are definitely not in the G19's job description.
For me, it'd be a revolver, probably a 44, definitely a S&W (plenty of used pre-sellout specimens to choose from), five inches, adjustable sights, stainless steel.
So, a S&W M629 or M66 in five inch trim.
Just my choice, -Kframe

No: I own a Glock [model 20] but if i had to chose just one = Para P-14. "limited" model

Got to love 1911 style handgun and 45 acp to boot... :)

Right frame size, wrong caliber for me. Over the last six years financial considerations have twice forced me to sell off my gun collection except for one pistol. Both times that pistol was a Glock 23.

While I can't knock the 19, my 23 holds only 2 less rounds and the .40 packs a substantially bigger punch than the 9.
