Best non-HP ammo for carry?

I've been experimenting with light for caliber hard cast bullets with a meplat, TC, RNFP, SWC. I believe they would make a most excellent SD bullet.

None of those are great with FMJ only...I truly and deeply sympathize.

That said: If you can get some type of flat-point bullet. Either FMJ, or maybe hard-cast? would be the best.

Anything other than a roundnose profile. I know it's "Worked" for a long time but....there is better.

Best FMJ ammo:

No question it would be a 230 grain .45acp bullet. Its been around (and doing a great job) for over 100 years so it must be doing something right. Lots of power and at the speed it normally shoots, the FMJ bullet will do a superb job when used as a self defense cartridge.

"If no expanding ammo is allowed, use the widest, flattest tipped bullets you can find which will reliably function in your guns".

AGREED!

Hirtenberger had a pretty hot +P+ soft point police load with a 90 or 100 grain bullet that should work well.

Everyone lo0ves hollowpoints....except govts

So the JSP is too often ignored. With some bullet designs in some calibers, hollowpoints barely out perform soft points for expansion, and JSPs often penetrate better than JHPs, due to slightly lesser expansion.

Expansion is good, it is desirable, but it is not, by itself, the be all, end all criteria of what makes a good load. Nor is energy alone the king. And without penetration, neither is as effective.

Modern bullet designs for JHP and JSP are much better performers than they were a few decades ago. But if the law forbids you, SWC designs have a better track record on game, and on humans than FMJ or round nose designs.
