I own a Savage 12LRPV in 6mmBR, a Savage 12VLP in 204, and a Savage 12FLV in 223. All have been used for prairie dog hunting.
My first choice is the LRPV. Super accurate, stays accurate for an extended period, the 6BR cartridge has more reach than the 223 or 204, and the heavy weight of the rifle minimizes the recoil which is important over a long day of shooting. The right bolt left port also makes for faster reloads. The target trigger is also adjustable down to a few ounces, versus about 2.5 pounds for the standard Accu-trigger.
For second, it's a toss up between the FLV and the VLP. I replaced the cheap plastic stock on the FLV with a Choate, which improved accuracy and tracked more smoothly in the rest. Both rifles have the same action and barrel taper, so it comes down to a laminated versus plastic stock.
If I didn't reload, I'd choose the 223. Lots of choices, and much less expensive than the 204 or 6BR.
