best gun for conceal/home defense?

The Glock 23 was my first double duty handgun. I feel that it does a good job for both home defense and concealed carry. It's also one of the more versitile Glocks out there. While chambered in .40 you can also get .357 sig & 9mm aftermarket barrels and use those calibers as well if desired.

I just picked up a like new Glock model 26 and just carried it yesterday for the first time. I'm really liking the sub compact size. It dosent dig into me and is light enough that the weight dosent bother me either. Since the sub compact and compacts can accept any glock mag from bigger models. It works out great for a hi cap home defense pistol as well.

Either way. I feel that a Glock Sub compact or compact in 9mm or .40 will serve you well for these purposes.

Others have mentioned some nice alternatives too. So as mentioned you'd be best going down to a gun rental and give them a try before making your purchase.

Good luck with your search and let us know on what you decide to go with:)

Best gun for CC/Home Defense

Not sure why the shotgun recommendations...they cannot be conceal carried, not to mention this Forum is all about handguns.

For a CC/HD combo in one gun I would go with a 32/380 ACP PPK, or a Makarov PM in 9mm Mak, or a short barelled 45 ACP (3" or less, ie 1911 compact or AMT BACK UP). These calibers are not great penetrators, will stop the BG and limit collateral damage. The .357 Mag, 9mm para, and 40 cal go thru walls easily.

Recently here, a young girl was killed when a 40 cal bullet passed thru a wall and struck her.

45 ACP coming out of a 2.9" AMT barrel or a 3" SA 1911 Micro Compact barrel does not cut as deep as 9mm para (in my tests, and I test ALL my carry ammo).

In the incident cited re the 40 cal bullet, it was a police bullet, which means it was HP, and it still penetrated the house wall.

Put me down for the Glock 26 or the M&Pc 9mm. I have both and both have been 100% reliable and have enough firepower (10 or more rounds of 9mm) for HD and they both carry well IWB. Both great guns; see which feels better in your hand and 'pull the trigger' so to speak.

You know IMO opionion any gun that makes a loud bang will work. The truth of the matter is that if a suspect hears and sees you shooting at him he isn't going to stay in the area and let you shoot at him no matter how small or how big the gun is.

My $.02 is get a carry gun that you really like and practice, practice, practice. Go roll some tin cans around, shoot plastic bottles of water, line up clay pigeons, shoot stuff at 50 - 100 yards. Have fun with it and learn to amaze your friends. Familiarity = Competence

Some points to ponder:

An immediate HD situation won't take place at long range, your carry piece will work just fine at "across the room" range if needed.

A smaller gun will be less likely to be taken away and much better in a "get off me" situation ('specially if it's a revolver).

A carry size gun is much less conspicuous when need be, such as if answering the door or helping someone in need.

You can use a full size gun for HD and CCW. I'm a skinny guy, 6' 0" 135LBS, and I carry a Glock 22 and it is also my main HD gun. (Sold my shotgun to keep the wife happy) Just because it is CCW also doesn't mean you need a mouse gun. The Glock 27 is a great gun but has a low capacity unless you use the larger magazines, but then you might as well get the G23 or the G22.
Get what you shoot best. Good luck!

I see that your post was only your second one and, from the nature of your question, I'm assuming that you may be a little new to the handgun world. If I'm wrong, excuse me. Anyway....

How about a Makarov? It's as easy-to-master-and-maintain as it gets. It's also pretty affordable to buy and to feed. A Makarov will not let you down. It's as reliable as any revolver and is about equal in power to .38 SPL. It's also a reasonably carry-able size and weight. If you want something smaller or more powerful in the future, go to it, but a Mak is one great all-around gun.

For SD, I recommend Corbon's Pow'RBall ammo or the old Silver Bear hollowpoints if you can find some.
