Best Gun for 600.00 or Less

Hello, have 600.00 (tax refund) to spend on a gun for carry and general all around use. Of course I want it to be reliable and rugged. I open to any gun revolver/semi-auto.

I have small hands and have found that Glock's have too much of a trigger reach for me. That is the only problem I have.

I appreciate any info that will point me in the right direction.... This will probably be my only gun. I love guns but have other hobbies/obsessions to spend my money on (damn you harley davidson).

Thanks

If its to be your first and last handgun, then look for a good S&W or Ruger revolver. Just find one that fits your hand and that your comfortable with.

You might take a look at some of the "budget" offerings from Kahr and see if they fit your hand properly.

 Here we go....

The "best" gun for under $600 is an opinion. It depends on what you prefer and what features you want. There are way too many variables to just give you a blanket statement answer. Go to a range and rent some different guns. If that's not possible at least go to your local gun store and handle a few
things.

That said, if I only was going to have ONE pistol for everything from ccw to home protection; I would say get a S&W 442 snubbie or Ruger GP100 if you want a revolver. If you want a semiauto try a 1911, XD9 or Kahr. Those guns are all very different from each other. It is going to depend on you! Good luck.

I don't mean to ask such an open ended question or seem like a idiot. This is not my first gun, I have owned a Glock, a few high end 1911's and a Kahr. I sold all my guns a few years ago and kinda fell out of the gun scene due to other interests. Each gun I owned had it's own good points and bad. Now I don't care about looks or coolness. I just want a good quality gun that I can beat on, carry and basically not have to worry about it's reliability.

Thansk again for the info.

I would look for a factory refurbished Sig Sauer. I believe they have a red stripe sticker or something similar around the grip.

Essentially you get a Sig Sauer pistol in new condition for about half the price.

In my mind these are some of the best deals on the market.

FNP 9, FNP 40, many different CZ including RAMI models, Springfield XD, Para GI expert, Bersa, Ruger Sp101 revolver, just to name a few.

Kahr CW9: @ $440... Reliable 7+1 capacity 9mm auto... Enough gun but not too big and heavy... Sweet shooter... Fun at the range... Nice to carry... 18 oz. (unloaded)... IMHO it's the perfect middle-of-the-road gun. After awhile you might decide to go bigger or smaller. If you like autos... it's a good solid starting point (this time around).

If you prefer a revolver: A ruger LCR (5-shot) 17-oz. revolver is a nice starting point... $450 range...They come in either .38 or .357 magnum versions. Either would be OK but I suggest getting the .357 magnum version because, with it, you have the option of shooting EITHER soft-shooting .38's AND, after you get bored with those, you can load up with the much-more-powerful .357 magnums to try until your hand gets sore... Just nicer to have the option.

These are my best 2 ideas. Others will have other ideas... It's all good. Try 'em out at a range before buying if you can.

some choices I would consider -- used L frame Smith in .357, Ruger SP101, used Beretta 92/99, or a new Stoeger Cougar (Beretta transferred the tooling to Stoeger which they own).

All reliable, all good shooters, all suitable for carry, some easier than others. All should be easy to find.

New:
I recently bought a S&W M&P .40 - sells for low $500s in full size or compact (I got the full size). This is a fantastic pistol and I can't recommend it enough.

CZ 75B in .40 S&W. Another great platform for this outstanding round. Sells for around $500 new. And there are a range of options in the family of pistols.

The plain vanilla Springfield 1911 .45 acp sells for under $600; I've not yet had this at the range but it feels great in the hand, seems to be quality construction, and gets great reviews. I'll buy one when the timing is right.

Used:
Dan Wesson 357 Mag (or really any of the great DW revolvers). Great gun, $450 or less for a revolver in good to great condition. And potential collectors value down the road as they don't make them any more.

S&W Mountain Gun, my favorite revolver in .45 Colt, .41 Mag or .44 Mag. Used this will run from $500 (considerable holster wear but good mechanical condition) to over $600 (very good condition).

S&W Mod 610 10mm/.40S&W. An amazing revolver (and close to my fav)! About $600 used in good condition (but hard to find).

If its to be your first and last handgun, then look for a good S&W or Ruger revolver.

+1

There are lots of good guns for under $600 but if this is likely going to be your only gun, it's hard to argue with a S&W or a Ruger revolver.

Look everyone here has some good ideas, but probably the best idea is to go rent some at a gun range and see what you think.

I would recommend an S&W or Ruger, an M-19 or a Security Six are good examples of older guns that have proven themselves and are fairly easy to find. Find a good one for say $350 and invest the rest of the $600 in reloading
equipment.

+1 to trying them out, but a few from my short list.

Sig sauer p6 -- sig 9mm quality at only $320
Hk p7 -- a great and ultimately safe 9mm used at $550 or so
Walther PPS -- the CCW glock never made. Available in 9mm or .40 cal. My daily carry.
Ruger sp101 -- my first revolver. Good .357 mag I use in the back country

Again, try some out. I have personal experience with these and recommend them all.

If you're looking for a SD pistol avoid anything less than .38 special +p or 9mm. Anything smaller does not meet FBI requirements for penetration.

Glock 19...but if that is truly too small (which I have a hard time believing unless you've got the hands of a 10-year-old girl), then a S&W M&P 9mm

Your best bet is going to a local range and renting as many guns as you can find that are within your budget. Also, take as many classes as you can.
