Best gen Glock 21 for 10mm conversion?

So, I'm looking at getting a Glock 21 for home defense, but I like the power of the 10mm for woods walking.

I plan to buy a separate slide for the 10mm conversion, probably the long slide that requires a 6 inch barrel. This has a nice long sight radius and will help reduce recoil.

I'm also planning on shortening the grip down to a Glock 29 or 30 length so it's more concealable and easier to carry and more modular becuase I can use the long magazines with the X-Grip for better grip when I want it or aren't concerned about printing or comfort while carrying.

My concern is: will the Gen 4's interchangeable backstrap system be unsuitable for shortening the grip?

If the Gen 4's aren't a good choice, then that leaves only the Gen 3's and there is another question I have and it's should I get a G21 or a G21 Short Frame? I handled both a few months ago at a local store, and I noticed that the SF did have a better feel to it, but the 21 felt fine too.
 
I would just buy both guns if that is what you want.

If you are looking at Lone Wolf for a slide, I believe they only work on Gen 3 frames......

I have the Model 20 with a threaded Alpha Wolf barrel and it's good for home defense as well as CCW and woods walking IMO....
 
Why would I spend over $700 on a Glock 40 when I can spend considerably less on a long slide, barrel, and parts, use it on a Glock 21 frame, and have both .45 and 10mm?
 
Obviously you can do what you want.

But buy the time you buy that slide, have it finished, realize an RMR cut would be awesome for a woods gun, get sights, etc. you could have bought the G40 MOS and had all that from the factory.

For that matter, the Glock 41 MOS would make a fine woods gun as well.

One more thing, your not gonna want to cut those grips down, these big guns need all the grip they can get IMO.
 
Yeah, so you say I should spend an extra $200 for an RMR cut slide, which would mean I'd have to spend $300 to buy an RMR sight, so now I'm out $500 more.

It's this type of nonsense that created the Great Recession. Totally unsustainable.

I've had no problem sustaining my gun purchasing practices for almost 60 years and literally thousands of guns now. Never had to chop up a gun or make do with mixing and matching.

If your finances are such that a few hundred dollars is a crisis, perhaps you should reconsider your priorities.
 
What I said was that you might find the YOU want those things, not that I think you should get them.

And honestly, I was just sharing my experience with you regarding the question you asked. I'm not gonna tell you what to do.

I don't yet have the RMR cut for my G20 but I would like very much to have it. Having the MOS from the factory, you don't have to get the RMR ever if you don't want to but you would have the option and I bet you would end up getting one if you have ever shot a handgun with an RMR, they are sweet.

If I had it to do again, I'd skip the 10mm altogether and go straight to the Model 41 long slide with the MOS system and an RMR optic.

10mm is overrated, it does nothing the 45 can't do just as well. Go with a hard cast bullet in the long barrel 45 auto and you will do fine.

Then you only need one gun, so no recession.

^ Jeez, if I really wanted a very powerful handgun, maybe I should get a .460 Rowland. Oh hey, I can if I buy a Glock 21 and get the .460 barrel and recoil spring! Don't even need to buy a new slide for that conversion.

Why is it when I ask a question, I get the asinine answers that always say, "Do this thing that costs more because I did and I'm a happy man." and whatnot?

I don't think anyone specifically answered that question for you because it is so blatantly obvious that the "feel" of a particular frame is highly individual and no one can answer it but you.

The rest of your post was just opinions and comments, which apparently causes you some consternation when other people comment and/or share their experiences on them. Have you noticed that you are posting on the internet? If you don't want anyone else's opinions and comments on the content of your opinions and comments, the best way to accomplish that is not to post yours in the first place.

Either ask your question and be done, or expect comments and opinions that may not agree with yours if you post your comments and opinions. You'll be much happier that way!

From the small amounts of constructive feedback I got, I've decided I'll get a Gen 3 SF model, try it with the standard 21 upper and later the longslide 10mm upper, then decide if I really want to reduce the grip or not.

Someone said the small grips with the long barrels doesn't mix well, but again, I plan on using the 13 or 15 round magazines with the X-Grip spacer to basically make it a full size grip.

The diversity of the posted experiences and opinions are the reason we make these posts.

At least for some of us.

For those that post for other reasons....don't be surprised if what you get is not what you want. And that's a very good thing. Minds are like parachutes, they only function when they are open.
 
Just buy the 10MM and use it for home defense. If your worried about over-penetration with 10MM consider that your average (i.e. watered down/plain jane) 185 or 200 grain load is usually with-in 50 to 100 FPS of the exact same bullet weight in 45 ACP +P loads. The expensive/boutique manufacturers have ammo approaching 44 Mag energy levels, but the cheap stuff that's easy to find anywhere that sells 10MM ammo is just a notch above 45 ACP.

By the time it's all said and done you're probably going to be with-in $100-$200 of buying the 2 separate guns.
 
Another vote for just buying a 10mm, or two. The top loads push a 200 gr bullet to 1250-1300 fps. A 44 mag from a shorter 3-4" barrel will be pushing 240 gr bullets to 1000-1100 fps, not anywhere near the advertised 1500 fps you'd get from an 8" barrel.

For personal defense the milder 40 S&W equivalent loads are way better than 45 ACP. You can even fire 40's through a 10mm Glock with no extra barrel or magazines.

You can buy a G40 with a 6" barrel and a G29 with shorter barrel and frame for less than buying a G21 and all of the modifications. And have 2 better guns instead of just one.

Yes, you can just "Cut Down" the grip...
but you'll instantly void the warranty.
Doesn't matter if you blow it up with factory ammo,
warranty goes POOF if you change the structure.

As a guy who actually owns a G20, don't half-ass it.
Go get the G40. It is worth every penny to have a
dedicated 10mm longslide. That frame also supports
the 6" slide BETTER than slapping it on a G29 frame...
folks that have done that have run into a few issues.

G40 also looks better if you stick a 9" LW barrel on it
than does the G20...functional, but looks silly.

Alright, with all the people that have replied "Git duh Gee Fortee!" I'll consider it. Originally, I was going to get a Hi-Point .45 ACP as a cheap home defense gun, but when I saw how low the prices for Glock 21's were, I got carried away thinking paying a bit more for a Glock over a Hi Point wasn't a bad idea and I could put a 10mm upper on it.

I'll think about it. I got other things on my list to pick up too, notably a Glock 27 Gen 4.
