Best compact .22 rifle for backpacking?

Marlin Papoose or even the standard factor issued Ruger 10/22 if you don't mind carrying a screwdriver to remove the action/barrel from the stock.

This topic generated a lot of interesting suggestions (some I'll have to check out). I just wanted to put in a (tentative) good word regarding the AR-7. I had one back in the 1970s (Armalite brand I believe), and it was very reliable, reasonably accurate, and a lot of fun. I know that several companies now make these, and I can't vouch for their quality, but I think the basic design is okay. I've never felt the need to bring a rifle backpacking (I always carry a light handgun), but if I did, I think the AR-7 would be my choice due to light weight, compactness, being semi-auto, and having an adjustable peep site (simple though it may be). Many of the other guns suggested, although they may take down or fold for compactness, probably weigh twice what the AR-7 does.

I have the Henry version of the AR-7. I think it's a POS, but I only paid $80 new for it and it really is a lot of fun. If I was taking it for any serious reason such as huting small game for food, I would rather have something of better quality. If I just wanted to plink out in the woods it would be fine. My dad has the Charter Arms version and I remember it being of better quality, likewise I think that the Armalite version is pretty good.

Dz,

thats what Im talking about...tks for posting that link....I might be putting that ole mdl 61 away....after all its been in the family since 1935, the first year they made em......that 22mag looks intersting as well although Id be prone to look hard at the 1022 22mag.......tks fubsy.

Actually, Dave3006 comes closer to what I do that any rifle. Never backpacked with a rifle except when doing a dedicated big game hunt.

Although not a "real pistol," ;) I usually pack a S&W (yeah, I know, but was bought before the sell-out) 317.

At 11oz (empty), holds 8 rounds .22 LR, adjustable sights, plenty accurate (moreso than me), an extra box o' 50 to plink weighs (?) next to nuttin' and did I mention 11 oz?

Really. So light, I do have to keep checking that it's still there.

If you want to go .22LR & still stay way lightweight, I cannot think of (or find) anything that fits the bill so well.

You asked about rifles .... I don't carry 'em when I don't have to.

Sounds like Feather's back in business too ... may have to check into that ... never too many .22s ....
