.45 ACP'll do ya.

So will the rest you listed (with the arguable exception of .44 Magnum).

And some you haven't. (.40 does everything 9mm does, better -- how's that for a flame war starter?;).)

I bet that dead horse the guy is beating was killed with a .45ACP.

That's a sign I need to quit this thread. Sooooo long.

From the additional information you posted it seems to me that what is needed is ability and training more than caliber. It doesn't matter what caliber you are carrying if you can't produce the pistol and get it into action when you need it most. Find some shooters and and ask them if they know somone who can help you with some training in defending yourself with a pistol. If they don't know anyone personally, they should know of some schools where you can go for training. Contact the schools and tell them your situation. Tell them you are trying to decide on the best firearm for your situation and ask them if they have loaners you can try. All this will probably not be cheap, but you will gain the information that will help you make the best decison for your situation.

Good luck!

7 hours a week? That's a LOT of shooting. For that reason only, I'd suggest 9mm, unless you are really rich, then I'd take the 44 magnum.

All that said, I agree a 'combat handgun' is sort of any oxymoron. Combat=rifle. Therefore, I would find a pistol that shoots much like a rifle. That leaves me with 5 guns in .500 and .460 S&@, down to the .454 Casull.

Hey I'm thinking of getting a two handgun combination namely a Beretta 9mm 92 fs Brigadier(16 rounds) and a .460v s&w revolver( fires .454casul,.45 colts, and a .460mag round. I don't know if it can fire .45acp also, please tell if you know). So what do you think guys, will it work?

If you look at what is being used by militaries around the world, the 9mm is the overwhelming choice. In fact, even though it's been over 100 years since its introduction, there are still major militaries switching TO 9mm from other cartridges. In other words, it's not only the most commonly used handgun combat caliber in existence, it's becoming more common all the time.

On the other hand, if you're planning on using it against tigers and elephants, perhaps it would be advisable to look for something more along the lines of a hunting handgun as opposed to a combat handgun or combat handgun caliber.

Because The Military Uses It Does Not Make It Great!

Militaries get what their government buys them and the 9mm's are cheaper to purchase and shot.

Having a cousin in the U.S. Army 1st Infantry Division @ Fort Riley who was recently prompted to Colonel and getting ready for his 6th tour in the Sand Box we have discussed this very issue. They want .45 ACP's.

Remember our US Military cannot use the modern hollow point ammunition they are restricted to hardball bullets.
The Hague Convention of 1899 bars hollow point bullets. The United States was not a party to that agreement. Yet, as most countries do, it adheres to the treaty, according to the International Committee of the Red Cross.

S&W did make 7000 M&P's for the US Military but did not get the contract.

Beretta U.S.A. Corp. Wins Largest U.S. Military Handgun Contract Since World War II

On another subject 5.56mm how about 6.8mm SPC for Rifles.

Last I checked, 7.62x25 mil surplus was cheaper than 9mm.

But you could be right. You're saying that Russia and China are switching to the 9mm because it's cheaper than what they're currently using. Just out of curiousity, what issue pistol calibers are Russia and China currently using and how much is it costing them compared to what 9mm will? The savings must be tremendous if it will pay for them to replace all the pistols currently issued.

I prefer the S&W 627PC. 8 rounds od 170 grain GDHP at 1250 fps yield more energy and more momentum than a .45 acp 230 grain bullet at 900 fps. I like the revolver platform.
