Best choice for 40 s&w...

Hard to beat the SIG P229 in .40 and a well proven pistol. Lots of them available too on the used and CPO market due to LE trade ins. Nice examples can usually be found under $550.

I have a SIG P226 .40S&W, it's a great pistol. I had a CZ 75 B .40S&W Tutone, a nice looking pistol that never ran right for me. I had a Gen4 G-22 that I traded off when I got my Gen4 Glock 21, which I think is much better than that G-22. I had an HK USP40 that I liked a lot but I traded to get my HK45.

Another vote here for ether P226 or P229. Especially over the P250. By the way. Buds has a special right now for some very good rail-less P229's for $379.

CZ75B in 40S&W is a great choice. Mine is one of my very finest shooters.

If you don't mind polymer, the Ruger SR40c is another excellent choice.

I know there is a lot of "anything but Glock" sentiment, but I find no fault with my 23. Shoots very well, totally reliable, and easy to carry in a Crossbreed Supertuck.

My favorite 40cal is my Sig 2022. A little challenging to conceal carry but a blast at the range.

The Sig P239 .40 is excellent. Easy to shoot and dead on accurate.

The Glock 23 is excellent.

Any classic Sig is excellent.

I love my Gen. 4 Glock 22. It is one of the most accurate pistols I've ever owned. It's a 2011 model with the famous and impervious frying pan finish. Believe it or not the thing conceals very well in the IWB appendix mode with a loose T shirt of Polo.

I have 2 Para 16-40 Canadians One in 40 S&W and another converted to 10MM with a spare 40 S&W barrel. Shoot full house loads in both and they run like a Swiss watch

I have the M&P shield in 40, which is amazingly, not heavy on recoil

I also have the P229 in 40

Love them both, but carry the Shield more

An H&K USP40 would also be a fine choice.

I second this. I have an USP 9mm that was such a good shooter and that since it was made for the 40sw I can use the hottest 9mm I can get my hands on and it won't break a sweat. :p

Still if you can get your hands on the CZ75 get it.

I had one before I got my XDm it's a big bulky thing much larger than the FN or P229. It would have made a heck of a range gun it's built like a tank, but I just felt the FN was a better carry gun and the XDm 5.25 works better for IPSC limited class.

One thing I've always liked about the HK USP 40 (and some of their other pistols) is that you can carry it "cocked and locked" or in the traditional (da to sa trigger pulls) double-action mode (with the use of the decocker) and it has a safety if you choose to use it. Not many other pistols offer this kind of versatility (some CZ pistols can be carried either cocked and locked or in the traditional da configuration, but to carry it in da the hammer must be lowered on the pistol while a round is in the chamber-though not dangerous in itself, some people view the practice with a worried eye).

The FNX series is like this too. It's a cool feature that opens it up for fans of different trigger methods and safety styles. I haven't had an opportunity to try the FNX-40 but my experiences with the FNX-45 have been very positive.
