Best choice for 40 s&w...

I want a 40 s&w. I have a Kahr P40 and due to some overlap in my gun platforms, desire to consolidate and other things, it is on its way out. I had an xd40, but moved on to get an xd45 5".

If I were to get an ideal 40 s&w shooter and/or occasional carry, and/or occasional IDPA, what would be that ideal 40 s&w handgun?

You might want to look at a used S&W Model 4006-the "original".40 S&W and, in my estimation, still one of the best. An H&K USP40 would also be a fine choice.

Yes, I have one of these and it is a fine shooting gun. I suppose you could also consider a SIG P226/229 which seem to get good reviews in the .40S&W caliber.

I'm not a fan of polymer guns but the ppq I bought for the wife changed my mine. I would recommend the M2 PPQ by walther. It is an excellent gun with a great trigger out of the factory.

There are a couple of very nice police trade-in's of Sig P229s in .40 S&W on GunBroker starting at below three hundred dollars. They are from the same seller I recently won one from there and they are in great condition.

I love the one I scored. Both have three mags and one even has a box and owner's manual.

I have gone ahead and acquired a new 357 Sig barrel for mine. You can use the same slide and mags from the .40 for the 357.

I will be your hero if you win one of these. :)

I had a walther PPQ M2 in .40 and loved it, excellent polymer gun, best striker trigger around. Great grip, high quality, i highly recommend it

All great recommendations, and the common thread seems to be a pistol with substance. A nice, cull-size all-metal something would serve well. My 40s are all full size, with the exception of the Beretta 9000S, which while all metal and stout, makes you aware you are firing a 40.

Im with the45er, if I were looking for a .40 that is the one I would be buying without hesitation. I am not looking for a .40 but still continue to find myself extremely tempted by that deal.

I have a Walther PPS, a Sig P229, a FN FNS and a XDs 5.25 and love them either the FN or Sig would be great for IDPA and CC the XDs would work too but prolly need a 4.5. One thing I like about FN is the 40 slide has less machining making it about an oz heavier and makes it a real easy shooting 40. I think Ruger does that too with the SR40 and from how my SR9 works I think a SR40 would be a safe bet.

So far I'm really liking the CZ 75 idea....another XD40 5" would be ok, or maybe it would be nice to really try out that FN FNS 40. Hard to lose money on the FN.

Hmmmm....

Nathan, for IDPA, you want a 9mm for SSP or ESP Division. The only reason to go with a 40S&W, in any platform, is if you hand load to minor power floor. Factory rounds make major power floor and you will be handicapped by the extra recoil. For carry I can only recommend any Glock, because I stopped shooting 1911's back in 1992 and switched to Glocks. The most commonly used platforms in IDPA SSP are Glocks.

Sig 226 would be my choice..../ unless you want to go bigger like one of the sig x-five models.
But i'm not into IDPA - My choice is based on the weight of the gun is like in .40...

If I wanted to carry a .40s&w for me, it would be a sig 239.../ but not a great range gun....but small, light for carry...if I didn't want to carry a full sized gun.

I don't care for polymer guns...

I used to stay away from .40 because I preferred the feel of shooting 9mm or .45 ACP. I felt that .40 was a tad snappy in polymer guns. Then I found out about the Beretta PX4 Storm. A friend let me shoot his and I was instantly hooked. Something about the rotating barrel design smoothed out the recoil impulse and kept it in line. The trigger was good right out of the box. With the larger back strap, it fits my hand like a glove. I also think it's a very attractive firearm. That is, once you swap out those bat-wing safety levers for the low profile versions.

I like the Glock 23 which like its near twin the G19 it's a compact size. In fact with a 40-9mm conversion barrel it pretty much is a G19. And you can drop in a .357 Sig barrel. If you then get a G27 all those longer barrels will drop in it too. Nice way to consolidate.

My 2 .40s are both XD-s, a Service and a Subcompact. Both (IMHO & YMMV) shoot well for me. They are heavy enough that .40 should not be a problem for the recoil-sensitive.

I carry the subcompact more lately, now that our neighborhood's "vibrant summer social scene" has ramped up.

IDPA I've never tried, so I cannot comment.
