Best carbon remover for BCG

Tool

New member
I bought a used upper with a dirty bolt carrier group. It has lots of carbon build up. I wonder what is the best liquid solution to dissolve it off?

There are multiple chemicals and solutions on the internet. And store-bought or field-expedient scrapers from materials you readily have.

Lots of carbon removers out there. Tried a few, never had great luck. On the back of the bolt, best best i have found is scraping it with a brass or bronze tool. Once you remove the big deposits off, let it sit with some clp on it overnight. Repeat as needed.

General cleanup, been having great results with Lucas extreme duty clp.https://a.co/d/f9QiZQy

Best thing I found, but far from the most enjoyable is RBC (Rifle bore cleaner) and lots of scrubbing with an angry Drill Sgt behind you yelling at you to get it all clean...(expletives omitted )

I have used Simple Green in a lidded container-
Set my parts in the container and let them soak for a while-
It's worked well for me-

Lucas Oil Bore Solvent (not very good for bores though) in an UltraSonic Cleaner. It's really an US cleaner solution more than a bore cleaner, but it is the best way to get a clean BCG, and trigger assemblies, choke tubes, pistol slides.

I learned a good trick from woodworkers. It works on carbide router bits.

You soak your part in a solution of 50% laundry detergent. In the morning, the crud slides off.

Some people claim there is a risk of hydrogen embrittlement. No idea whether that is correct or just another neurotic Internet fable.

Automotive injector cleaner with a thimble full of acetone … mix both in a jar.
I trust you won’t leave a gun part soak for a week. Overnight soak is safe .
Use a bronze/ brass tooth brush after soaking. Back & forth brushing …
(elbow grease) time & effort go a long way.
