Best calibers for wild boar

The pig pictured above is fairly large for my area, I don't weigh them but it it required a tractor to even budge it. I shot it in the ear at maybe 25 yds with .223.

TRG 42 Wrangle Tangle

Ive cought hogs with dogs, brought them out alive and all that Jazz, but I wear my .22 Mag on my side, sometimes you must shoot, in a perfect world maby not, but wierd things happen quick when your dealin with a Mad Boar Hog.

I Went on a hunt in Oegon for hogs. I brought two guns the first was a 45/70 the second was a 357 magnum (carbine).

The "guide" said the 45/70 was too much gun so I used the 357 magnum and it worked fine. The hogs in Oregon are not as big as they get down south. I got 4 hogs and 3 where DRT the other one ran about 15 yards and died.

If I was hunting in Texas I would bring a 45/70 (my elk and deer gun)

Each rifle and cartridge has its own set of parameters, but I think any center fire will do it if used properly. I don't encounter any with the shield but I am in western'ish Texas.

I have killed them with my mini-14 using 65gr. sierra gameking bullets in my reloads. Killed them with my single shot H&R Handi Rifle .243. A couple with 12ga. buckshot and slug although I wouldnt recommend slug if your planning on eating said hog. Last but not least, well really the least .22mag bolt action marlin. I havent tried a .22lr but I think with a good shot it would be fine. I just prefer a little more ummph.

Shot a big swamp boar two seasons ago that went about 400-450lbs that had a hide/plate/sheild on his shoulders. The 30'06, 165grn Nosler BT went right through it and dropped him in his tracks.

Keg,

I can guess that they aren't old enough where I live, none have tusks worth bragging about.
Anyways, they are gone with the lack of water, if nothing happens real soon, I dont expect to see any this year. The coons are pretty sparse also.

I think a lot of people have erroneous thoughts about what constitutes wild boar and wild pig.

I know people who kill wild pig with 300 whisper and .223, and #2 shot even. Pigs aren't the same as a 500 pound wild boar. on a real boar, I'd like a 6mm to30-06 range rifle or shotgun slugs.

Don't mess with your Garand, it's a piece of history. Pickup a 30-06 Bolt gun and you have your pig killer for life. Some may say it's too much, but if you don't hit one well bigger is better. And you can use the same reloading dies for your Garand.

Would you say that he could actually use his garand loads in his bolt, as long as it wasn't habitual?

I don't think that doing the opposite would be good.

Rick..I would say this hog has a shield....Got this pic from my hay meadow few days ago....

Mosin M44 carbine, with bayonet extended of course. That way you can stick 'em if they charge!!

Seriously, though, I've seen an AR stoked with .223 bring a pig down just fine. I haven't bagged one on my friend's property yet, and I know it isn't a rifle... but I've got a 1979 Blackhawk in .41 magnum that I'm dying to unleash on a piggy in the near future. I'm betting the results will be more than satisfactory provided, of course, that I do my part.
