Best Barrels

A cylindrical (unfluted) barrel is stiffer than a same-diameter barrel that has been fluted.

Aye, but the fluted barrel would be

1)stiffer than a cylidrical barrel of the same weight (but a necessarily smaller diameter, assuming the same material used) and ...

2) have more surface area (and thus cool faster) than a barrel of the same diameter.

Correct me if I 'm wrong, guys, but I don't think I am.

That said, for most applications, the weight saved is unimportant, as is the improved cooling. Truth be told, most shooters' needs could be met with a plastic stocked single shot .30/30 that shoots 4 MOA........ I, for one, am darned glad there all these other options. Hooray for diversity, at whatever price the market will bear!

The fluting or dimpling I was looking at doing is more for asthetics than anything. I was going to mount the assembly in a McMillan stock in OD green with the black spiderwebbing, then have the barrel, action and trigger assembly finished in matte black with the flutes or dimples run out in OD green. I had my eye on an OD green burris tactical but I might just save up for a NFor something like that.
