Best AR15 for a beginner.

Keeper
This is what I ended up doing after lurking on several boards and reading everything I could. Studying the options, sites, handgaurds, butt stocks, uppers, lowers and getting totally confused. I when to http://www.youngsguns.com or http://www.gunsonsale.com and looked at all the different pic's. This way I knew what was what and I could put things together.
I myself chose a BM 16 inch VMatch with no sites. Why 16 inchs, weight, easy target accusition and the velocity is not that much great on the 20 or the 24. Maybe the 20 will get you 7-10 yards further and the 24 again that much further. I also would forget the fluted barrel and put the money into good optics. Myself I am going Trijicon Accupoint 1.25-4x24.

Now this is just my opinion and really means nothing cause I don't know what you intend to shoot. I have found a bunch of cheap mags, USGI and preban Colt and others very reasonably priced it you need . I have 10 20's and 10 30's coming and don't even have the rifle paid off till mid May. Heck, I even have ammo....Ya I know, just another sicko ;)

Good Luck

Karsten, common man, give the longer barrels a bit more credit than that!

Start handloading and you'll find the longer barrels giving you the advantage.

I'm heading out shooting with somebody from this forum tomorrow, if he brings along his chronograph I promise I'll fire a batch of rounds through all three of my barrel lengths(14.5, 20, and 24) and I'll report back so you can see the difference. At long range any little bit of extra velocity you can scrub out of that barrel will really pay off, better trajectory(making scope adjustments easier), less wind drift, and keeping the bullet super sonic for as long as possible so you don't have to worry about transonic oddities.

Now if you're talking about a 200-300 yard rifle, in terms of trajectory what you said is fitting where the velocity between the barrel lengths will mean relatively little other than the amount of energy they will carry when they impact the target.

Going from 16 inches to 20 inches could tag on as much as another 300fps to the velocity of your round, going from 20 inches to 24 inches could add another 200fps or so to the velocity. Depends on the exact bullet weight being fired and the rifle bores whether they are "fast" or "slow."

At long range those differences will make a big difference when you're behind the scope watching the bullets impact the target.

UglyGun,
I guess I should clarify and that was what I said....My Intended Purpose. What I intend to shoot mine with and 16 inch barrel would not do much better with the added wieght of a 20 or 24. At one time I intended to buy the 20 inch but the 16 will work just fine for me. If the 16 inch VMatch is going to get me to 200-250 yards, that is great.
I have these for longer shots should I need 300 plus

To to me those little 62 grain steel cores don't have to work really hard.

Just my opinion again. I know I can handload but Mil surp is cheap and I don't do varmints.

Nice rifles, one of these days I'm gonna have to get a bolt action 223Rem, I'm in Ca. so I'm gonna need something politically correct when I go out shooting on public land.

I've got one AR15 for short distances, that's what my little 14.5 inch Shorty AK is for. I'm actually gonna build up another match grade upper, it's gonna be my "walking gun" with a light weight and freefloated 16 inch barrel, I'm not planning on ever pushing it much past 300 yards. For most anything out past 300 yards I'll turn to my custom 17 pound "beast" AR15, I've nailed a few 400 yard ground squirrels with it already and it's a gratifying shot to make. I'm not good enough or haven't gotten lucky enough to make a hit at 500 yards though.

I've got an AR10 that I'm gonna build up into a really long range rifle, hopefully a 243Win upper for 600-700 yard varminting, and a 260Rem upper for HOPEFULLY out to 1000 yards.

Hopefully one of these days I'll grab an M1A, I've got the M14 magazine shells left over from when I did my AR10 magazine conversions. Having magazines sitting around but no rifle to use them with is the worst kind of temptation for buying a rifle that you've ever seen!

If you want, you can go in to edit your second post and there should be an option somewhere on the page to delete the second post, look for it as the option should be there somewheres.

Real men love Bushmaster.

Sorry, couldn't resist. Good that your getting a Bushmaster; there is nothing more the others (posers) can offer you (except hype).

5.56 NATO chamber for reliable feeding.
Chrome-lined chamber and bore for durability.
1/9" twist for versatility and ammo compatibility.
Mil-spec hard anodized finish.
Great customer service.
And a dizzying array of configurations to please just about every couch commando, DCM match shooter, LEO, and varmint hunter.

The "others" can't touch it!

Bushmasters are very good, but doesn't give more than some "posers" (e.g. Rock River),who could be just as good, IF NOT BETTER, for a better price.

Man, you guys are firing me up with this AR business. I've got $ 1,500 burning a hole in my pocket and will be home to purchase one this week. That Maryland AR site was very good and informative!

Looks like I will go with the Bushy, A3 Shorty, also and I am strongly considering an ACOG for the top. Will post what I get when I get it and after it has been wrung out. Maybe 1,000 rounds the first day. :D Anybody wanna come with me?

Poodleshooter,

From the sound of your reply, you apparently don't wear hearing protection. I wouldn't risk my hearing with any centerfire rifle, with or without a muzzle brake!
Nope, I always use hearing protection-except when hunting. As a hunter, I appreciate a rifle that is slightly quieter. Hence, I usually hunt deer with my 30/30 or .308 vs my 7mmRM with it's BOSS -instant deafness!!!!
I can quite easily tell the difference between a braked rifle and an unbraked in the same caliber. I can usually even tell a difference between different velocities. My pain threshold is peaked around 2700fps. The 3200fps of a .223 is bad, even with earplugs.

This is weird...this topic started in 1998. Uglygun re-started it in March.

BTW, Uglygun, I won't buy a rifle from Metalcraft. Their use of the language is awful. They should take a remedial English course. It shows a lack of professionalism.

Steve Smith, you're right that is very wierd indeed, maybe somebody deleted their post before my post? When I made my first post the topic showed up as a recent thread to me. Then again the forum was taken down for maintenence and maybe that could have something to do with it? stranger things have happened, at the time the topic appeared right up at the top of the forum list about 12-15 topics down the list.

As far as Metalcraft? Their quality of work and their customer service is what I care about most, the ability of the website designer to spell or use of the english language doesn't concern me too much. The ability of a gunsmith to turn a barrel and set it up so that his products are consistent performers is what concerns me most along with the ability of the builder to provide the product at a reasonable price. Based upon what I've heard from others who own Metalcraft products the guns and uppers they own perform very well and shoot like the blazes. I'd rather have a person spend more time learning the skills and gaining the experience neccesary to build my gun than learning how to use perfect english so that he can try and sell me into buying his product through the use of words.
