Thinking about converting my Marlin 336 into a home PERIMETER defense gun...What ammunition??

A couple of months back my neighborhood was having some break-ins. I keep a 357mag & 20gauge for home defense, but want something a little more effective out to about 100yds than those two.

I live in a somewhat rual community and only want this to be able to return fire if need be...What would be the best ammo to fill this roll??

Would a 125g hollowpoint be optimal?

How would 150g Remington corelock's perform from contact distance out to 100yds?

Any soft point ammo in this caliber would work fine in this role. I'd probably go with whatever 150 grain load was most available locally.

Self defense at 100 yards isn't unheard of. Especially if you are out in the sticks.

Should you find yourself being fired upon from a distance, what are you supposed to do? Wait till they come closer?

Freenokia, I would go with whatever load your rifle likes.

Do you live in Chechnya? How about locking the door and calling the cops! If they break in then by all means open fire but there is no reason to have a fire fight in your yard. I have a beautiful mosin sniper rifle that I know I could climb out on the roof and take down a would be threat at 600 yards but I'm gonna have a really hard time justifying that course of action. If you get fired upon outside and have time enough to run inside and get your rifle you could just as easily go inside and seek cover and wait for the cops. It's vigilante justice to go get a rifle and fire back outside from 100 yards instead of calling the cops. In any case any type of bullet from a 30-30 would stop a human including fmj's

Irish, in rual communities it could take 20 min before a county mounty could respond. I see no problem as long as the fire fight takes place on YOUR property. It's when it crosses over to someone's else that you would get into trouble. Remember no shooting accross open roads or bodies of water.

They will take your hunting lic away (LOL)

I would say that your odds of needing it are for that purpose are very slim. if some punk is breaking into peoples shops and stealing peoples air compressors and chainsaws they probably are not going to come armed to the teeth. they are looking for a quick buck and are probably skiddish enough that pumping off a shotgun round from your front porch will probably make them leave and think twice before returning. now on the off chance that these guys are very desperate and willing to open fire on your house I would say that whatever round you use for hunting is going to be the best round for home defense. just about any 30 cal bullet is deadly and even more-so in soft point, if you REALLY dont want to take chances you could try leverlutions.

If you shoot someone at 100 yards, it is not self defense and you are going to jail.

in most instances you would be correct but if some thug is peppering your house then returning fire is self defense no matter the range.

Unless your state has no castle law. In that case you are supposed to go out the other side of the house and walk/drive away.

Any round made for deer hunting should do.

Hell if it's selfdefense and it out in the sticks just dispose of the body where only you and god knows about it. When you hear people talk about how the break ins have all of a sudden stopped just smile with a **** eaten grin and say "yep they must have moved on" :D

Any good 150 grain softpoint will do.I'm not buying Remington for awhile because of crimp issues.

Jeez, can we not answer a technical question without all the other BS?

but what will we do when we cant argue with the interweb?

Any commercial load should be all right...

for HD use.
Whatever you use for deer be okay.
How the LEO's & judicial system response MAYBE a different matter.

Just too many factors to consider from this distance.

Hope never need to use.

Best bet would be to secure your area, use motion sensing lights to deny access and silhouette intruders (but not your self), and call the cavalry in-bound.

I'm guessing some here have never lived in the country or owned land. Poachers can be a serious problem in the sticks. Same thing with moonshiners and pot farmers if you live in areas where that is prevalent. These folks aren't always terribly observant of property lines but they tend to be both paranoid and well armed. They also make their livelihoods in the woods, so they tend to be more skilled in fieldcraft then most and likely to have the drop on you if you are just tromping around in the woods. It's certainly not inconceivable you might find yourself on the receiving end of fire at what we might otherwise consider too distant for self defense range.

A little bit off topic maybe. But the idea that everyone can just cal l911 and the police show up a few minutes later is not true in lots of places.

It is 13 miles of dirt road to my house. The response time during day light is 45 minutes to whenever.

At night after the second shift of deputies have gone off duty there are maybe 5 deputies for the entire county. Cochise county is larger than some states.

Response time then is over hour to the next day.

The concept of locking doors or leaving is just not feasable.

100 yards, 150 or 170 grain 30-30 should perform about the same accuracy wise. Practice with water jugs and settle on one brand and weight.

what's the perimeter of your property?

I use hornady's LEVERevolution on my Rem. 788 30-30.
(I use it for hunting, though).

It still has 1000 ft lbs of energy at 300 yds --- plenty to drop an adversary.

Hornady also produces the Z-max round (look it up)....

If they're shooting at you from 100 yards, what cover in a typical house would stop a rifle bullet? Are you supposed to lay down in the house and HOPE they don't hit you? Lock the door? Apparently your door is a more expensive door than mine. Instead of shooting back, you're recommending giving the bg an exciting game of whack-a-mole. If you're looking for a good .30-30 round, you may consider the leverevolution rounds from hornady. Also, take a look at extreme shock, if you have some extra cash laying around you're looking to burn through.
