Best ammo for Ruger 10 22

My 10/22 with the factory barrel would feed anything. Several years later I installed a bull barrel, and it became a little fussy when it reached around 300 rounds - time to clean. If I was out varmint hunting, I would run a Bore Snake starting from the chamber end to the muzzle a few times to get me through the day. The chamber on my bull barrel is tighter.

CCI Blazer is good. The Stingers also fed well, but I am not a fan of it for hunting or accuracy. For me, the price of the Mini-Mags is way out of line. If I am going to pay that much, I may as well shoot a reloaded centerfire pistol cartridge.

Winchester has a few offerings in .22LR. If you ever use it for hunting take a look at the Winchester XPert High Velocity Hollow Point. The Winchester XPert HV HP has worked well for me on varmints, rabbits and racoons. The XPert actually has a decent hollow point vs. the joke of a dimple or pin hole of a HP found on some manufactures .22LR bullets.

I have also had good luck with Federal value packs, but others have reported problems.

I like Remington the least. Of the Remington, the Thunderbolts work best for me.

You will have to see what your 10/22 likes best. I would clean the barrel and action really good before I shoot it. Invest in a quality brass cleaning rod, soft metal cleaning brush and be careful with the muzzle crown when cleaning. Also be careful with the firing pin area so the tip of the cleaning brush does not cause any damage. I suggest removing the action before cleaning the barrel. The barrel can also be removed for cleaning, but doing this will affect the POI when it is reinstalled. I am not a fan of removing the barrel unless it is necessary.

Try changing your extractor, you'll get better variety maybe. I couldn't use Remmington anything until I got a VQ extractor.

Mine likes Winchester, Federal, Blazer, and those spitfire cartridges.

Anything but remington should work just fine. Remington is the bottom of the barrel when it comes to rimfire ammo and I like remington.

I've had the best luck with CCI mini mags. I've had pretty good luck with Winchester X too. I've got some Remmington that I'm going to try next. I bought those in a bulk box. One thing I won't shoot though is the lead round nose through anything that I own. I'll always stick to the copper pleated or copper jacketed rounds. Much less fouling in the barrel!

Try lots of different types of ammo and see what your gun likes and doesn't like. Some ammo may be more accurate or feed better than others.

However, if you are just plinking for fun, any ammo that feeds well is as good as any other. Don't get hung up that need to shoot a certain type ammo. Range ammo, is just that, ammo that you are going to throw down range to practice with.

Geez, I must be lucky, my and my brother's 10/22s both shoot anything we put in them.

But, to repeat what everyone is saying, test out different types and see what works best.

Mine has taken everything I have stuffed in it with no problems. My main ammo is bulk pack of whatever brand is on the shelf at the time. Of course, I have to be certain to clean the rifle, at least every three years or so to keep it running smooth. ;)

I'm gonna assume you are talking about plinkin and hunting because target work opens up a whole nother can of worms and frankly your gun ain't up to the task anyway.

You're gonna be looking for an ammo that is READILY AVAILABLE, reliable, cost effective and fairly accurate. IN THAT ORDER. IMO there is no need to go and spend a bunch of money on target grade ammo for most needs and if you have to drive 60 miles to a gun shop to buy it it ain't worth trying.

For small game hunting and practice I use MiniMags. It's clean, one of the best for accuracy in "hunting grade" ammo, reliable and available every where I turn. For plinkin I use which ever bulk run best in my guns. Like others have stated, I avoid Remington bulk like the plague and I also like plated bullets for I have had leading issues in 10/22's with lead only bullets.

Note: I also use mucho Velocitors but only for hunting larger game like ground hogs and coon. If everything you hunt (if you even hunt) is smaller than 10lbs Velocitors aren't necessary.

Mine shoots anything I put in it.... Well except for Remington, too many unprimed cases and too many squibs. The 10/22 is generally not an accurate platform out of the box. Mine is most accurate with CCI followed by Federal and Winchester bulk. I don't buy match grade .22 ammo. I do splurge and get a few boxes of CCI now and then.
