Best .45

I have about $500-750 to spend on a new concealable pistol. I have a 9mm and a .32 acp. This combination gives much confidence and normally would not think of adding a new gun but some "new" $ popped into the budget and instead of wasting it pre-paying or painting the house early I felt it would be a great family investment to "invest" in some hardware. Please let me hear from you and let me know if the gun you are recomending is one you have for sale. I would Also be somewhat interested in a .45 LC as I am thinking of joining the local Cowboy Group.

What are you going to do with it? Target, CCW, Cowboy Action shooting? Do you want single action, double action, auto or revolver? You mention concealable in your post as well as Cowboy shooting, I'd choose different weapons for those missions. Tell us more.

Why a Colt...

M1991A1 of course...~$490 + change the trigger and MSH to Videki or WC, witha WC checkered bar stock MSH, "hardcore" extractor and ejector, Match bushing and there you have it...with dinero left over for some serious shooting @ the range:)

Excellent condition used Colt Government Model is well within your budget and will not require any, um, "upgrades."

HTH

There are many nice .45ACP pistols in the price range you mention. For $750, you could get two brand-new Rugers...a P-97 semi-auto in .45ACP for carrying and home defense, and a Vaquero in .45LC for cowboy shooting.

If you just want to go with one, there are others that fit the bill as well. A good 1911 is well within your budget...there's the Springfield Loaded, which will set you back around $600, and which comes with many desirable upgrades included, such as Novak sights and an extended safety lever.

Then there's the Glock 21 (13+1 shots with pre-ban magazines)or its compact brother, the Glock 30 (10+1 shots)...they're both .45ACP, sturdy and reliable, and around $550 each brand new. Glock also makes a slimline .45, the Glock 36 which holds 6+1 rounds.

CZ makes a very accurate and solid pistol in .45ACP, the CZ-97, which can be had for under $500 in most places.

With a budget like yours, there's really very little you can't afford in the way of quality .45ACP pistols. Do yourself a favor and go to a good gunshop and see which one fits your hand the best and works for you...all the choices mentioned above are good for home defense, CCW and target shooting, and there are plenty of other pistols out there that fit your requirements both in caliber and price range.

The SIG P220 is lighter, more accurate out of the box, and has a DA option and decocker compared to M1911 style pistols.

But if it's for fun, any ole .45 works!

lendringser makes a good point, I've heard generally good things about the Ruger P97 and the Vaquero is hard to beat. You could do them both for $750 and buy ammo.

I'll play the 1911 curmudgeon role:

Lighter = worse, plain and simple.

More accurate -- depends on the 1911. It's not more accurate than my Kimber.

DA option -- why would you want this when you can have the best trigger on the planet: the 1911 SA trigger?

Decocker -- meaningless once you understand the brilliance of the 1911 trigger (which takes all of one shot to appreciate)

The 1911 also has a *safety* (remember those)? It keeps your gun from going off when you don't want it to.

That "tweak" likely exceeds the entire budget criteria, let alone the base model pistol.

It is a fine pistol, though.

My vote would be for a Kimber Pro Carry or Compact. Just under $700 and should be good to go out of the box.

You could get a Charles Daly and a case of ammo and still have a couple hundred dollars in your pocket.

Or you could buy a Dillon RL550B and shoot a whole lot more.

Charles Daly... LOL... that's a good one. The title says "best," not "worse metallurgy than my frying pans." :D

Kimber, SA, SigSauer and Glock are all good choices. A CZ-97B is another good option. But I'd say get one of the new Colt Government Models. I've seen the blued ones for around $550.

Best 45?

It depends on the following criteria:

If you like the Tupperware look, then go with Crock...I mean Gloclk

If you like the Super Fly MacDaddy in the 'hood look, try a Springfield Loaded in stainless steal

If you want to feel like you have the "Tactical" edge, sell your wife and the tater-tots and blow your wad on a Wilson Combat

If you like the pot metal and bamboo look, go Upchuck Daily

If you want a

REAL PISTOLA , than your only choice is Colt 45

and I don't mean the malt liquor:D
