Best .38 special Snub nose?

64? Did I hear the word 64?

The 64 pictured here, along with my Speed Six, was my 2nd carry gun once CHL started here in Texas. I used a 640 in .38 spl, as my Summer gun, and the 2 inch 64 as my Winter gun.

That is when I could wear a coat, I used the 64 with a belt slide, and in the summer a T-shirt and IWB holster with the 640.

Still have them both to!

Wish I could figure out how to post pics in here, because then you could see my lovely Smith 637-2 with Esmeralda grips ... I also have an old Taurus 85, which has been relegated to car duty because it can take rough treatment and high temps without flinching ... the Smith gets carried occasionally, but it's mostly a range gun because (IMHO) if you can shoot a snubbie accurately, you can pretty much shoot anything ...

Not perhaps the "best" but the one I remember most fondly is a Charter Arms Undercover .38 snub that I bought as a brand new LE who was so poor it was all I could afford for off duty. Just bought an old one for my collection just cause!

bikerbill,

First download the image to your PC. Then using Paint or any imaging program shrink it to about 50k so it's easy to upload (make sure it is in JPG format.) Then at the bottom of the post boxes you see when posting look for the 'Manage Attachment' button.

Click it and search for your photo. You can upload it that way.

Taurus 85ul, another good snubby

I second the Taurus 85ul. I have had mine for about 7 yrs, and absolutely love it. I settled on the Taurus for a few reasons. I shot the 85ul against a S&W mdl 36,and a Charter Arms .38. My Taurus was more accurate then either one of the others.(was quite disappointed in the S&W). It was a lot cheaper(in initial cost) then the Smith, and I was getting my shots off faster, even though its an ultra-lite(17 oz). It can also handle +P ammo. 3 Standard pressure Hornady 125 gr XTP's mixed with 2 Speer 135 gr +P Short Barrled Gold Dots are the "rockets" I carry. If not the Hornadys, I use the standard 125 gr Federal Nyclads. They all work flawlessly from my snubbie.

The best medium size snub in opinion is the SW M19/66. I wish Smithy still made them. That said, this M60 has been at my side for 17 years now. Can't imagine going any where without it and I can't endorse the jframe and it's variants enough.

IMHO, the very best snub nose revolver is the Ruger LCR in .38+P or in .357 mag. It can pack enough power to defend, is light weight, and is very concealable. ;)

I like any revolver to have single action capability. I once had a SW 640 and missed it so it got traded off.

For pocket carry 6 shot .38 either the Colt Diamondback snub or the Detective special depending on ones preference for adjustable or fixed sights.

I prefer the Ruger SP101 in .357 even though it has only 5 shots. It is controllable and .357 is just a class above in protection.

I have the DAO version with Secret Service grips and it is not a bad option for CCW if you can shoot well.

S&W model 49.... Funky looking as can be, but for me anyway, it's the perfect pocket gun. SA/DA, all steel...but not too heavy, wonderful trigger and did I mention funky looking..... :D

Just bought a new S&W 340PD.
11.4 oz 5-shot .357mag.
Extremely potent and easy to tote.
Kicks like a three legged ninja.

Yeah, just imagine what it would do to your ears, or those anyone within 50 feet. Hopefully you carry it with .38s.

FWIW, my carry pair of .38 snubs are the 438 and 315 Night Guard. Both are light, accurate, and very user friendly (trigger, sights, adaptable to various carry options). Considering how worn my 438 is in just 3 years, I'd say it's my favorite and always goes out the door with me whether going for a jog, hikes, or work.

I have a S&W Model 642 and a Colt Detective Special. Both are excellent little pocket rockets. But I prefer the 642 and carry it on a regular basis.

NVBigEd, if it took two thread resurrections to finally bring up the 49 (the REAL Bodyguard! ;) ), then it was worth it!:)

Over the years, I have gone through Taurus 85s, a couple of Rossi snubs, through a 442 AW and finally settled on my 49 for pocket carry. All nice guns, though the Rossi's were a little rough (but reliable). Most of them I traded away for another gun that struck my fancy. I finally settled on the BG for the SA ability and the classic look--it has the wood 'lemon peel' grips with a Tyler T-Grip. It's quite pleasant for me to shoot, even with +P ammo. Since it's my CCW, it is the first gun I fire at every range session.
