Best .357/.38 under $600?

Another vote for ruger gp100 4" or if you want something smaller&lighter then ruger sp101 in 4.2"

Go with .357 because you get 2 calibers in 1 gun. Same would go for 44mag but that ammo is a lot more and you'd want to be able to shoot the thing with out taking out a loan :D.

single action gives the best choices under 600. However....

Look at taurus, rossi, commanche. Everything can be worked out in the end.

Its easy to suggest you go look for this discontinued model from this particular company, but..

those are collectible, hard to get serviced, priced higher then you want.

some of these used guns have issues. that cant even be fixed by the company. WHo wants to spend 300 on a nice used colt or sw when its going to be 9 months and 800 dollars to fix that loose cylinder crane or cylinder latch?

For a DA - I'm with the others - a good S & W M & P/Model 10 or a Model 15 in a 4" - I have a M & P (pre 10 DOB 1956) with a 5" barrel and that is an excellent length as well . . . .

If you're interesed in SA - a Uberti Hombre, any of the Rugers . . . .

A .38/.357 wheel gun is an excellent "first gun" and something you'll keep for a lifetime . . . I have vintage 38s as well as several 357s - I only load and shoot 38 spls. - a good cartridge that's been around for over 100 years . . .

Another vote...

for the Ruger GP100. I will have one real soon myself...6 inch SS.

I saw a guy at the range shooting 125 GR HPs with his and it was very accurate.

Under $600, its going to be used...

Back in 1977, a brand-new 4" nickel Colt Python cost me $350.00

Those days are long gone. These days, a good used S&W 586 or 686 can be had for about what you are willing to pay.

Good thing about a S&W, they hold their value well and actually appreciate in value as the years go by.

Taurus and Rossi, no way. Ruger.....kind of. No guarantee though.

Patently ridiculous.

Taurus, Rossi, or Comanche are junk from the factory.

The "hard to get serviced" and "800 dollars to fix" a minor problem might be an issue with some older Colts, but certainly not with an S&W. A pinned S&W Model 10 can be had in excellent condition for $450 or even a good bit less if one is willing to accept some finish wear. There isn't a production revolver available for any price today that equals the quality of these old guns. ("Old" being a relative term.) I have owned dozens of them over the years, and have had almost no issues. In fact, I can think of but one problem with timing, and a local 'smith fixed it in 24 hours for $35.

oooh so you know a dealer in my area that can get me one of those 450 dollar smith and wesson revolvers? Id really like to know. The only actual gundealer in my area has a nice little habit of charging lots of extra fees for anything that doesnt come on his normal distributor run.

So that special order by buying a police trade in from the internet for 450 is going to cost about 150 dollars extra just from spite.

You need to find a better dealer then, no matter if he's a way's away from you. Sounds like gas money will still be less than dealer fees.

Become a member on GunBroker and register on the auction side. I've been a member there for over 13 yrs. and still find and get good deals.

Not unless you are a dummy.:D

Are you familiar with the term "ubiquitous"?
If you can't shop around for a month or so and find a pretty good Model 10 for a pretty good price, you need to broaden your horizons.

Ruger Security Six or Speed Six...

Looking to purchase my first gun and Im leaning towards a revolver. Any suggestions as to the best one i can get for under $600? I would like it to be chambered in either 357 or 38 special, and with a 4" or 6" barrel. No snubs please!

edit: will be used for carry, and home defense. Also would like it to be a DA/SA.

Carrying a 4" or 6" revolver is quite a challenge if you mean concealed carry. For home protection and carrying, I'd re-think the snubby as an option. I have four snubbies and is my prefered piece for home protection and concealed carry. I have other guns for range shooting. Anyhow, to answer your specific question, in your price range, I'd look for a Ruger Security Six or Speed Six both of which could be found for well under $600.
