Best 308 For Under $500

In November of '09 I bought a Rmeington 700ADL Varmint at Dick's for $419 after the two rebates. This rifle in stock form shoots sub-moa.
 
My choice would be a T/C Venture. It has a great trigger, 5R rifling, and a 1moa guarentee. You can get them here in my area for just over $400.

I 2nd this. T/C has been putting out some nice center fire rifles. I'm still curious on how they aren't getting the publicity that they should be getting.
 
Just stay away from Savage Axis/Edge and Remington 770

Why is that?. I had the Edge and it would out shoot most guns 3 times its cost. Very accurate rifles and very nice price on them also.

I have a Savage Edge 223 and an 10 FP-SR in 308. I like both. The Edge/Axis does not have the AccuTrigger, but the factory trigger is not bad. The grip is noticeably thin-skinny. But it shoots great and is light enough to carry around (hunting). With the scope package they are well under $400 on sale.

I would rather that it did have the Accutrigger, but have no plan to replace the stock trigger.
 
The biggest complaint people have with the Edge/Axis is that the recoil lug is a part of the stock and not a part of the receiver. That really limits what you can do with it as far as customization.

I think any customization would take the OP right out of their price range of this thread. But, exactly what customization does the recoil lug preclude?

For information, the recoil lug is a "plastic block" between the action and the stock, which hold it in position.
 
Saiga .308

2.5MOA should be easy. Some are posting 1MOA targets. With all the reciprocating parts, the semiauto Saiga might be a little tougher to shoot accurately than a .308 bolt gun, but obviously some can do it.

Just got mine and haven't shot it yet. They're a little hard to find right now.

If you convert, you can make them as tacticool as you want.
 
The savage axis and remington 770 are the fine rifles I guess, but if his budget is $500 I wouldnt go for the bottom rung rifles.

I have no experiance with the remington, but the savage will be accurate, but the trigger is really bad, stock is really flimsy.

Sure if you just want a gun that goes bang buy one of those 2, but the other models I listed I think are a significant step up.

Any of the high-quality aftermarket stocks for one. Also probably out would be any kind of bedding job, although somebody may figure out a way to do that with their stock configuration.
 
Stevens 200! I just bought my second! One in .223 and the newest in .30-06. I have shot the .223 alot and is a very comfortable system to me. The trigger on that one is heavy but crisp. The .30-06 doesn't have a whole box through it yet, so some things haven't smoothed out. The trigger feels a bit sloppier on the '06, but I'm thinking that will smooth out a bit. Plenty accurate for anything I'll ever need them for.

I know this is an old thread but for what its worth - I had the exact same question and this thread and forum helped me decide. I got the Venture in 308 weather shield with a Bushnell scope, extra mag and sling for 468. Just picked it up the other day and will be shooting it this weekend. I'll be posting the shooting results on the thread I posted about venture 308.

What did you end up getting? Thanks all for the input.

This is a zombie thread, so some of the information is ~2 years old. I recognize that the basic question ("What kind of .308 rifle can I get for <$500?") is still a valid question, but I'm going to ask that folks who still have questions about this start a new thread. Given the recent climate in firearms sales, I suspect lots of the old price information needs to be updated, anyway.
