best .22lr semi-automatics and best ammo(plinking, varmint) ammo for them

I might as well join the mix.
For general/cross purpose use, the Rugers are hard to beat.
For high end precision shooting, the Hammrli 208 (no longer in production) and the FWB AW93 are the berries. (One does see more and more .22/1911 conversions by Marvel and Nelson on the line but that’s another story).
Ammo.....for any new .22, i buy as many different types and brands of .22s as I can afford and then test them to discover the best for that particular gun. Sometimes results are surprising....my HS Victor shot SV Federal as well as any other ammo.
(Slamfire....thanks for the target data and pix.)
(Saleen....thanks for the test data. I was not surprised that the Victor shot the tightest groups.)

For CZ 75B owners the Kadet conversion kit is the logical choice.
I have several CZ pistols, and the Kadet Kit .22lr conversion. It practically lives on my 75B, and also works great on my PCR. I find I shoot it a lot more than my Ruger MK II's, and it is very accurate also.

I have a 5.5" bull stainless Browning Buckmark Camper and Ruger Mark IV Target.

The Buckmark is much more accurate. I normally shoot it at 25-30 feet at a 2" target.

I think something is wrong with the Mark IV. It is back at Ruger because it shoots low. But that aside, I get a lot more flyers with the Mark IV. I bought the Mark IV as a backup / replacement to the Buckmark because of the plastic stuff inside the Buckmark. And I was getting pitting on the breech end of the Buckmark barrel. But I have concluded I will buy Buckmark spare parts and just shoot the crap out of it. In contrast, I am not sure I will keep the Mark IV. We'll see if it's better after a return trip from Ruger...

JJ45, I agree with you, by real good ammo I mean ammo that functions the gun everytime or nearly so. CCI mini-mag usually works. Before the ammo crunch I had pretty good luck with Federal auto match. This in a Ruger MKII. I have a couple High Standards that don't like anything.
