Best 22LR for plinking.

Savage MkII with AccuTrigger. Once you get a handle on how accurate it is, even the best intentions of keeping it as a plinker will turn in to 'well, maybe I can get the next group tighter....'

Smith and Wesson's M&P 15-22 are pretty darn fun, though.

JMOfartO:

I don't believe the gentleman was looking for a dedicated "target" 22cal. rifle, but more one he can take out "back" and plink with for fun..

It seems a lot of folks recommend the Ruger 10/22, and that's ok.. I like Rugers, but in pistol or revolver form.. (I have three LCP's, one LC9, one Security-Six, and one Single-Six Convertible)..

For some reason the Ruger 10/22 just never appealed to me, but I did buy a young cousin a new 10/22 as a gift several years ago (his first rifle).

He loves it...

For my plinking pleasure I have found my two 1970 Marlin Model 39 (Century Limiteds) offer about as much fun as I can stand, and more accuracy than I can take advantage of.

My first has just factory sights, but the 2nd came with the all steel Redfield peep sight... Both are surprisingly accurate, the actions are very slick, and if you'll hold your mouth just right they'll shoot as small a group for you as most other lever action rifles.

I think each of us have a particular affection for one brand or another from personal experience, and that doesn't make one better, or worse, than the choice of another person..

Just nice to have choices...:D

I used to have (when one could own them here) an Erma M1- basically a .22 cal M1 carbine- I would have to say either that or a 10/22.

Something about the ergonomics / feel of the m1 or 10/22 that are pure magic.

My 10/22 sat in the safe unloved, while I moved on to CZs. I recently put on a Eabco M1 carbine stock and a pair of Tech-Sights, and now it's fun to shoot again.

I'd vote for the 10/22 if only for its incredible versatility and the abundance of aftermarket gizmos and parts.

I found myself looking at the same dilemma a few years back.

I chose the Marlin 795 because it was very inexpensive ($100 new), and more accurate then most .22's under $300.

The ONLY thing the 10/22 had on it was customability, and I have an AR for that.
